P-01 Rusting In The Back?
« on: July 19, 2014, 10:29:20 PM »
Hi. I bought this P01 used from someone and he did not disclose that it was rusting in the back where the hammer hits. I decided to buy it anyways since it does not affect performance, but I was wondering if anyone can tell me what they think of this? The previous owner claimed he only shot 2 mags and then just kept it in the safe. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to recoat or repaint this? Thanks.

EDIT: Here's what it looks like now after sanding and then bluing with Birtchwood Casey Flat Black Ink Pen. It's not the best job, but looks better than before.

EDIT AGAIN: Well, I decided I wasn't happy with the bluing work. Came out sloppy. I have now just sanded it down and polished it. Let me know what you guys think.

FINAL EDIT: Cerakoted the entire slide Graphite Black.

How did you learn of this "rust"? Do you have the gun now and are you able to examine this area closely? If you're looking at a photo, it could be many things, and the first thing you might do when you have the gun in your hands is clean the area with a good lube or solvent to determine whether it's really rust or buildup of factory lube and particle debris. Good luck.
Accuracy, n. A certain uninteresting quality carefully excluded from human statements.

The photo is one that I took of the gun myself. I have the gun in possession, and so far I've tried using solvent to clean it and it does not come off. Looking at the finish, it does look apparent that the hammer has wore off the finish and somehow that area starting getting a bronze color build up.

Thanks, I guess linking to Dropbox doesn't work. I reuploaded the image to another link here:

heero! if my p-01 had the same problem i would just take the gun apart so i can use a copper wire brush on the rusted area with some solvent to clean it up. then i would cold blue the entire back of the slide around the firing pin.

I will certainly try the copper wire brush with solvent. May I ask how I would be able to cold blue? Is it a product I can purchase to do that? Thanks.

Using a Birchwood-Casey touch-up "pen" might be easier. (And I think that they do a better job than the liquid.)

I actually do have this touch up pen. I might give that a shot first, but I'm curious if it'll hold up with the hammer striking that area.

I just tried with the pen and it seems to be holding up pretty well. This might have been the solution. I'll see how long this will last. Although, I had a bit of a concern; I might have gotten a little bit of some ink into the firing pin where I was bluing. Does anyone know if this is OK? I used a toothpick to scrape off around the circle, but not sure if it's of concern. Thanks.

heero! after you blue it you can polish the area with a q tip and then reapply the blueing. repeat till  you are satisfied with the outcome then use a q tip to apply a coat of oil to the entire area.   the oil has a tendency to lighten the blueing some that's why more than one application.  you may have to keep that area up by additional applications as the pistol gets fired and cleaned.

From what I could see in the picture, you will first have to clean the area up with 600 grit or higher sand paper ( i would use 1000grit). You will have to remove the firing pin from the slide, and use a flat needle file with sand paper wrapped around it. Once the area is clean of all rust and associated minute pits, then proceed for bluing. Else, rusting would continue internally and just resurface at some point in time.

Hi! Thanks, I have removed the firing pin, sanded it down, and reapplied the blue ink. Looks much better and it shouldn't rust underneath now... HOWEVER, I'm stuck on a problem... I can't figure out how to put the firing pin back on? I'm having a hard time keeping the pin pushed in while hammering the roll pin back in. Anybody able to help me out with this last step?

Thanks to everyone who has replied in this thread... I really appreciate it. I will likely take pictures afterwards to show.
