Muggia, thanks for the prompt reply and the added info.

RSR, thanks. I saw that post and would prefer the Apex one but am wondering two things about the Apex - does it stay on with no strap and do you think it would shave down in a similar way to the UTG so that the stock will fold?

Since I'm here I'll mention that I've had a chance to use the rifle with the padded stock and it works very well for me, better than I'd hoped.

Looks great IMO.  Sounds very functional as well. Thanks for sharing, I might try it.  What is the yellow adhesive --  tape?

Thanks, the yellow is just protective tape for the adhesive that comes already applied. Each side had it but I cut off the other side when I trimmed the strip off to reduce the diameter. Not all pipe insulator comes with the adhesive on the edges but most does these days. I can tell you that the metal stock is no longer an issue for me and I don't even think about it now.

The yellow is just the plastic/cellophane stuff that covers the adhesive.  The adhesive itself is clear -- actually believe it's just a form of doublesided tape.

My VZ2008 folds fine with the UTG-47 pad and locks into place, without any shaving.

Good to know! I'm thinking of ordering the Apex one and trying to shave it down a bit.

Apex one fits better; it's much more sculpted in the female pocket side for the stock.  I used paracord to tie it on rather than the velcro strap though. So the apex one is more secure fit than the UTG, but the UTG is probably a little more undersized whereas the Apex is exactly sized -- both have some friction against.  For accidental removal, I feel like the apex is less likely to be knocked off.  But for maximum security, both need to be tied on and both can be removed even if tied on if you try...

You can wrap it in camo tape instead of paracord too.

I'm not opposed to using a strap - being able to shave it enough to close the folder is more of a priority for me.

That vet wrap comes in camo, too. I was tempted to try it in a grey and white zebra stripe pattern they had when I got the black.

Good idea for the vet tape. I have used hockey tape on a wire side folder too.

I just did mine last night.  A couple minor variations that i did are using a piece of  $0.97   flip-flop cut to size sanded and glued on the butt end, it is about 5/8 inch thick of flip flop foam, and a thin strip of the same flip-flip foam under the insulation on the cheek side to make it thicker there.  I have electrical tape wrapped on it now but im gonna pick up some sort of outer wrap today since I don't want tape adhesive on my face as it starts to come apart as electrical taped stuff tends to do.  Makes it way more comfortable IMO.

I used bicycle handlebar wrap. So far, so good. Kind of like my brothers Mako folding stock, but not ready to drop 150$ on it yet. Walther PPQ on the way ::)

I just bought some clear plastic tubing from Lowes 5/8" OD - 1/2" ID...less than $4.59 for 10 ft.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_443178-104-SVKI10_0__?productId=4566544&Ntt=clear+plastic+tubing&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dclear%2Bplastic%2Btubing&facetInfo=

I let it straighten out for a few days, cut off a short section, slit it down the middle and slipped it on the folder.  I haven't fired it yet, but it seems much more comfortable than the bare metal (it's firm has a little bit of "give" to it), and isn't as bulky looking as the foam pipe insulation.  I'll wrap it with either black electrical tape or duct tape to hold the slit closed, probably.

I like the flip-flop idea except for gluing it on - I'd think it'd get pretty grimy after awhile.
I thought about handlebar tape also but the vet wrap sticks to itself and is still easy to clean or replace so I went with that. I like the way it forms an almost fused surface after awhile.
I tried some vinyl tubing as well but it just didn't have quite enough padding for me.

One thing that's clear is there is no shortage of clever ideas that people come up with to address the same problem. That's a big part of why I like forums like this one.

I'm about to order a butt pad from Apex and will throw in an original muzzle nut to try out as well. I think a little extra length would definitely help.

In honor of a new case of ammo and the last warm day, I took it out today at a place where I could try it at 100 meters and I continue to be impressed with the accuracy of the thing, as well as how handy it is while traipsing up and down hill and dale. I found a good spot to lie prone about 5o yards from my target and because of the angle I was shooting, about half the ejected casings ended up landing on my back, which was a new one for me.
