Heat Shields for sale on ebay?
« on: October 27, 2014, 01:31:07 AM »
Anyone have any experience with these? http://www.ebay.com/itm/VZ-58-VZ-2008-Heat-shield-/281458071021?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41883555ed#viTabs_0

I tried to make something similar with aluminum foil but saw no benefit.

I saw great results with my aluminum foil sheet...but I did also upgrade to the original European beech wood stocks. Maybe that had something to do with it.

I saw these on ebay as well, and he has a You Tube post about them. Seem easy enough to make yourself.

I bit on one...you're right, it looks like a piece of thin sheet metal, a magic marker and a pair of tin snips is all you need to make this

My only concern is if the heat isn't coming through the handguard, then it is staying inside longer and making the barrel warmer. It may have a minuscule effect on barrel wear, but it's something to consider

Agreed that it's something to think about...my response is mah!!!.....unless it's a weapon of war firing thousands of rounds a month, it's not a concern...but that's just me

If your tender hands are really bothered by the heat, you can try cutting your own heat shields out of some aluminum roofing flashing.

alternatively, you can use aluminum tape, or fiberglass sheathing, or fiberglass aluminum tape, or fiberglass insulation batting stuffed under the barrel-- if anything it will keep the handguard from melting.

As mentioned, it will reflect the heat, or insulate, and keep the barrel hotter.  An upper handguard. like bonesteel or PRI will absorb the heat, and increase surface area and mass, for radiant cooling.

If only i had a ready supply of thin aluminum sheet metal. ::)  I'm gonna pop open a cold one and think about where I could get my hands on some.
