RSR and a bolt release?
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:38:12 AM »
RSR, are you also working on a bolt release buy?  I don't know if you saw my old post about the one I bought from Zahal, but it was smaller in diameter than the original, and very loose fitting in the rifle.  I took it out and put the original back in.  I was thinking about welding the lever from the Zahal on to the original, but that's a lot of work if there is something better out there, and I have three rifles that I want this on.

Soon Manticore Arms should have a solution that will work as it should. Stay tuned.

I checked their site. They don't sell anything for a VZ.

vblue42 is referencing a different thread where Manticore was discussing interest in parts that they might manufacture.  There is a poll where you can vote as well.

I am working on alternate approaches with the TBRs -- since I keep getting asked, here's a PM sent to another member that covers all the specifics but basically, there's an exclusive retailer for the part that pairs with the zendl mag release who's really expensive for a small piece of metal that's a high failure part...

Quote
Bolt catch/releases, including original factory part were/are a high failure rate part -- between 10 and 20%.

The bolt catch/release channel uses a proprietary, specifically sized drill bit.  Most aftermarket like Century and AWO/ORF use just a standard metric drill, which results in either too tight or too loose of channel increasing likelihood of failure...

I've spoken with folks that have tested all of the aftermarket ones and failure is usually 10-15% on CSA receiver rifles and 15-20% on non-CSA receiver rifles.  Basically, the bolt catch/release is actually undersized for the amount of force/mass it absorbs and that requires near perfect manufacture of this part -- there's not really any tolerance for errors/less than perfect hardening (specific case hardening specs in this instance) tolerances, welds, casting/machining, etc...

So recognizing the high failure rates, aftermarket bolt release manufacturers usually include extras at no cost for replacement of failures...  And due to design issues/likely interference, the TBRs and Mag Releases have to be designed to work together.  So for the Zendl Mag Release, there is one exclusive retailer who prices his product only in Euros for US buyers (+30% over Czech crown price), refuses to do any bulk discount, refuses to provide any extras for failures, and requires expensive shipping and wire transfer protocols.  All in it's about $80 per TBR to go w/ the mag release.  Adding in the extras you'd have to buy to account for failure that's $96 before shipping.  Just to cover costs on a group buy scenario, it'd be around $110-115 per item, which is absurd for a little piece of metal and more than double what any of the the other Czech or Canadian TBR manufacturers charge -- granted, there are only 3 or 4...

So I'm working angles with the production factory and some other options to be able to get a more typical deal which should result in the TBRs for the group buy to come in around $60 delivered hopefully.  But we shall see.

Hopefully this answers your questions.

I'm new here, and confused!  Does this mean the group buy on Zendl bolt releases is going to cost over $100 per bolt release?  Holy cow.  That can't be right.  I'm sure I'm not understanding something here.

I'm not going to be doing a group buy until if or when I can wrangle a "deal"...

So, no, no $100 TBR group buy...

In a couple of months we will have quality US made accessories likely including a bolt release so there should be no worries and no need for foreign group buys.

Doing my best to chop through all the work to get  to the VZ-58 stuff, no pressure, right?   ;)

Both the Zahal TBRs and the Zendl TBRs appear to be operating just fine in OOW and Czechpoint receivers.  Thank you.

The post above is opinion, and I am probably totally wrong, so please pardon me if I offend anyone in any way. I am speaking only for myself and just sharing my thoughts, not trying to start an argument with anyone, and if you disagree with anything I have said, I concede your correct.
