Author Topic: WTK: New style round CZ 75 hammer fit a pre-B 75? (Read 4355 times)

I just completed a deal where I am the proud new owner of a well used 1985 Pre-B CZ 75. I paid $400 for the pistol & three original mag's.

My question is can I install a newer late model round hammer in my old school Pre-B CZ 75? I'm used to repairing or at least detail stripping most all of the handguns I own. I guess I'm asking is are there any compatibility issues doing this? Usually those long hammers chews up the meat between thumb and index finger.

Welcome to the forum. That's a nice lookin Pre B you got there. Sorry, I can't answer the hammer question but someone will be able to.

I don't think so. I bought a new "B" hammer for a 1991 CZ 85 a few years ago and found it to be quite different from the Pre B hammer. I had to abandon the updating process I had in mind because of it. Go ahead and check with Angus, but I really don't think it will work. There were quite a few differences between the Pre B and B guns beyond the shape of the hammer. I believe the geometry of the hammer/trigger mechanism was changed in addition to the hammer spur. i.e. the CZ isn't like the Browning Hi Power in which you can readily change out a spur hammer for a round hammer - I believe the changes to the CZ's go far beyond that. IMHO.

Figures! I had it all worked out in my head how I was gonna have a Commander style hammer in my old pre-B pistol....blah, blah. Thanks for sorting me out. I will check with the others who were mentioned though just in case.

I appreciate all the useful information. You know how it is when you get excited about a new project and start the research.....then a snag or two. Helps having a whole forum full of CZ buffs who are kind enough to help out a newbie.

I recently pondered this myself because I actually like the spur style hammer and was thinking of getting one for my 75B. In looking at the images of the B and Pre-B hammers on the CZ USA website, they look different so I'm assuming you'd likely have to replace the sear as well and perhaps other parts. You can call David at CGW. He's a great guy and will go out of his way to answer your questions.

You could also do what a lot of Hi Power guys do and you can bob the hammer some. You can do it yourself if you're handy with a dremmel. If not, I'm sure a competent smith can do it and I doubt it'd cost much to have them do it.

Makoman, CZ USA used to have spur hammers for the 75B retro. I just looked and they don't list them anymore that I could find. Might be worth a call to them and see if they're going to get anymore in, if you really want a spur for your 75B.

Yes, go with the competition hammer. I've installed them on two pre-Bs recently and they work great. You might have to install a new disconnector to fix timing issues, but the work and you can get a shadow quality trigger with a little effort.

Yes you can put a commander style hammer to replace the spur hammer on a pre-B CZ-75. But it has to be the right one and requires some fitting. Mine came from CZ five years ago.

After seeing how much money it would cost to achieve a mere change in the shape of my hammer spur, I fell in love with my spur hammer all over again and spent the money on ammo and magazines. Or one could also take all the money it would cost and put it towards another CZ.

Just sayin'.

Thanks for the tip. I emailed CZ and just heard back. They do have them. I got confused because it says "pre-B 75" in the description. After clicking on the image, the description states that it is compatible with the B series pistols.

I'm new enough to not know what "the competition hammer" refers to. Also what's a "shadow"?
