Picked up my first pre-B.
« on: December 14, 2014, 01:42:48 AM »
Got it from Mach 1 Arsenal in Knoxville, supposedly it is from Israel but could be wrong.

Took it out today, 200 rounds fired with no issues.  I can punch the numbers out of the target with any of my 75Bs but I think the sights and shape of the trigger on the pre-B might have something to do with me shooting left a bit with it today.

I noticed the mag brake inside is quite loose and rattles around a lot.  Also the magazine does not drop free.  It's probably over 20 years old too, but it drops free from my other 75s so maybe the brake is the issue again.

Other than that, I am really happy with it and glad I finally got a pre-B model 75 for a great price..

Nice! Looks like the finish is in decent condition too.

Sounds like your mag brake is working right. Pull a grip panel and you should see what's rattling. I have seen some breaks that are all mangled up from previous owners re-bending them so mags drop free. If you do this while it is installed the mounting tabs can open up. I can also tell you that the tabs break easily when you try and tight them up too much. :-[

Its in decent shape, camera on ipad didn't pick up some of the scratches, but its not bad at all.  Shot great.

Anyone know if these 15 round mags will work in the pre-b?

Given the amount of service it has seen, I'd treat myself to a new recoil spring before doing too much shooting with it. I just bought 3 of them from CZ USA. They're $5.00 but are on backorder right now. They'll email you when they get them back in stock, and I can't see that as being very long at all.

I'd recommend taking the firing pin out and cleaning inside etc ...amazing how much gunk can collect in there!!

I took it almost completely apart and cleaned it up.   I fired 200 rounds yesterday and didn't have any issues but am anxious to find another mag or two that will work in it.   I read the thread on filing various areas to accept the 16 round mags but am curious if these mags from MecGar will work in it:

From what I was told when I asked a similar question was that typically Mecgars won't fit without the mods you mentioned. Factory 75b 10 rounders and factory Sp-01 18 rounders will. http://www.czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=65428.msg442925#msg442925

IMHO the idea that 18 shot SP01 mags are going to work correctly in the Pre-B guns is one of those urban legends that righteously needs to be debunked. Here's why.

The 18 round mags for the SP01 MAY work, depending on the individual pistol and the mags you happen to be sent - or it may not work at all.  I forked over a painful $100 for a three pack of them a couple of years back for my 1991 CZ85. One inserted fine and functioned correctly except that it wouldn't hold the slide back on the last round, and still won't. The second one was an unacceptably tight wedge fit, and I do mean WEDGE FIT, and the third one ground to a dead stop a good 1/4 inch out. So I kept the first one to use with the '85, and rerouted the other two to my two CZ 85B's, which readily accepted them.

From this experience I'd have to say that using the SP01 18 shot mags isn't the cure it is often thought to be. Given my bad luck with this fix, especially when considering the obvious variations in dimensions from mag to mag,  I think it's a crapshoot at best. And I definitely wouldn't pay the high price for a three pack of these mags unless I had another gun that could use them.

As cntrydawwwg pointed out, the factory 10 round mags work fine in my 1991 '85.

Good info, thank you.  I just realized that while at my local range I asked the smith about the mags not dropping out and the magazine he tried in it was in fact a 10 round mag out of their rental 75B Omega.  Guess I answered my own question and didn't even realize it...LOL

Hi JayPee - sorry to hear about your lack of success with your 1991 CZ 85 and SP-01 18-round mags. On the other hand, I've run a half-dozen of these magazines on up to five different Pre-B CZ 75s (from 1980-1991) at various periods without any significant problems.

Could it be the CZ 85s that's just a bit different? Would like to hear more about other users' experience with the older CZ 85s and these magazines. I think this question usually comes up with regards to the more prevalent pre-B CZ 75 and not the older CZ 85s.

Good Idea. I wouldn't think the '85's would be any different than the 75's, but stranger things have happened. I tend to believe that these dimensional variations in the mags may be completely normal and my gun could be on the ragged edge of tight tolerances in the mag well department, which would explain why only the smallest SP 01 mags will fit it. As further evidence of this, one of the original factory 15 round mags ejects like a house afire while all the others are held in by the mag brake as designed. And too, straightening the mag brake did no good at all - which again speaks to an unusually tight mag well. With my luck you wouldn't want to go to Vegas with me! ;D

Let us know what your inquiry turns up, Psyop96. I'd be very interested to know if the '85's really are different from the '75's.

I recently got a Pre B and very happy with it.  I have replaced the locking block, recoil spring and hammer spring with a D spring.  The D spring made a big difference in DA pull weight.  I have been surprised at how well it shoots.
