Why is the 82/83 trigger so dang smooth?
« on: December 22, 2014, 04:47:08 PM »
I took the CZ-83 out for the first time in months, and was suddenly reminded again of how much I love it. I freely and proudly admit I bought this gun intending it to be a safe queen, and was pleasantly surprised by just how well it shot. The trigger is nicer than any other gun I've ever handled - it's perfectly smooth in double-action, and breaks oh so cleanly in single action.

Mechanically, why is this trigger so good, especially compared to my other CZ's? Is it just the lack of the safety stop/decocker that I'm used to on my 9mm guns? Is it just that it's mechanically simpler? Can it be replicated on a larger gun?
CZ-75 SP-01 Tactical; CZ-75 D PCR; CZ-83 Satin Nickel; CZ 2075 RAMI BD; Kadet 2

Having a safety/decocker can make the trigger noticeably more gritty, one of the reasons why I opted for the CZ-75 Compact and not the PCR or P-01. It's also one of the reasons why so many prefer the SA 1911 platform.

Try the trigger on a Bersa Thunder .380 Plus next time you get a chance and feel how crappy it is compared to a CZ-83, the Bersa .380 Plus being the closest thing to a CZ-83 there is today, except having the safety/decocker.

It has to do with the geometry of the internals, spring strength, and leverage. You can get the same (or similar) trigger pulls on the larger CZ's using CGW or CZ-Custom parts and Competition hammers, but it will cost you. CGW can do some magical things with CZ actions.
