Range report w/finger issue
« on: May 07, 2006, 01:55:53 PM »
Hi,all.I just got back from the first trip to the range with new sp-01. I think I'm really gonna love this one. I fed it 150 rnds of blazer brass(115),and it didn't even hiccup. The groups I shot were a bit low and left of 10 ring, about 7 o'clock. Very consistent, probably me and not the gun. I'll shoot it from a rest next time just to be sure. However, the trigger seems to want to "bite" my finger on almost every shot. Is this a common thing to happen ? If so,what is the cause ? My p-01 doesn't do it. Would stoning the trigger help ? Maybe I just need to toughen up my trigger finger ? Any help on this is welcome. Thanks....    Jim

I have the same issue with mine, resulting with a nice busted blister on my trigger finger.  The guns ran flawless, but I am working on getting a different factory trigger with less of a curve to take out the bite.

If you are going to shoot USPSA Production then stoning or otherwise changing the profile of the trigger may be deemed as an "external modification" and is probably (most likely) not allowed.

Thanks Tom. I don't plan on any competitive shooting ,at least not in the near future,so the trigger stoning/mods are not a problem. I went through a lot to get this one.It shoots very well, but I'm a bit disappointed with the finger issue. I'm relieved to know that I'm not alone. Congrats on the twins,by the way...They're beautiful. Are you passing out cigars? (Just Kidding).              Jim

I think the best solution is to replace the trigger with one from a 85c.
also will get the advantage of an adjustable trigger. which Matt says he can trick out the reset on it.

I have not experienced those issues with the SP01 trigger..but I have small fingers.

Maybe some misunderstanding about the reset?  The 85 Combat trigger can be adjusted for overtravel, but not for takeup/reset (unless, by "reset" you're addressing the overtravel, bit.)

Hey Walt..

thats what i thought..but Matt said he was able to shorten the reset by limiting the travel the trigger return to..
Not sure if we are talking the same thing or not..as I thought the 85c trigger only had the one screw for overtravel..

I do not have one in front of me to look at..

Thanks guys. I'll try to polish this trigger a little bit before I decide what to do next. The thing that I don't get is that the trigger on my p-01 is fine in regard to biting my finger ,while the one on the sp-01 apparently has an appetite. They are the same triggers,no? When I get done and make another range trip,I'll let you know how it all turns out. Thanks again..Jim

The standard SP-01 has the new, "recurved" trigger, which has a different shape than the older trigger.

There is also a standard trigger.

The 85 Combat is a variant of the standard trigger, with an overstravel adjustment.  (Adjusting it so that it doesn't go back as far may be what Matthew was talking about when shortening the reset -- as the reset would be shorter, if you did have to travel forward as far...)  I found my 85 Combat trigger to be uncomfortable and had the gunsmith to round its edges when he did a trigger job.

There are several SA triggers, a plastic with overtravel, a metal with overtravel, and a metal with overtravel and take-up adjustments.  The SA triggers will only work with guns that have been converted to SA.

85 combat trigger are on my website.

BE carefull with that overtravel screw, if you adjust it in too much without relieving the half cock you can destroy the sear, quick smart.
Don't just test the reset check that the sear is not catching the half cock on the way down.

OK, got the 85 triggers in both guns.  Only minor surgery, still waiting for the morphine to wear off... :rollin

Anyway, what a difference for me.  Much better fit and much more comfortable throughout the entire pull, and the larger curve does not bite.

I am looking now to forward to many thousands of rounds between now and October!

Thanks guys for the advice!!
