Scratches on slide from dust cover
« on: July 17, 2015, 07:08:37 PM »
I have a Stainless 75B, It has a  small little scratch( looks polished) on the spring tunnel of the slide and a corresponding scratch on the inside of the dust cover. I have two questions concerning this?

1. other than cosmetic will this hurt the function of the gun? will it cause problems with galling etc? Should I fix it?
2. Will this wear be self limiting, and stop at a certain point on its own?

Thanks guys

Hi Scooter.  We need a pic to "see" what you see.

It is just a tiny wear mark, just wondering if it would wear to a certain point and stop or if I needed to get at it with a stone and smooth it up or leave it be.
If it doesn't begin to prohibit function I don't want to waste the time to try an fix a non existent issue.

Can you you feel any burrs on the inside of the dust cover?
Except for having a pretty pistol and knowing there are scratches  ( would irritate me),  I doubt it's a major concern.
Maybe someone else who experienced something similar will contribute.

Can't feel any burrs, there is just a corresponding scratch on the inside of the dust cover.

Minor contact will give added and unwanted friction.  I would remove some material from the inside of the dustcover to ensure the contact is eliminated.

Would this contact "fix itself" as the pistol has round put through it and the area wear on each other?
Wouldn't there bee a point were they would create a clearance l like a slide smoothing out, our would this cause galling?

I can't say what the outcome would be as have never witnessed this in the past in person. Theory says galling is possible. Erosion would be too slow, it wouldn't clear it self. The needless friction is not welcome in my books. It could complicate matters in case of a malfunction. Removing material from inside of dust cover is a 10 min job with 200, 400 and 600/800 grit paper by hand. Remove material with 200, finish up with 400, final smooting with 800. Or send it in to CZ or a good gunsmith.
