Matching a recoil spring with CGW SPGK1 spring kit?
« on: October 09, 2015, 10:58:52 AM »
Hi all;

I recently bought the SPGK1 kit, AMAZING! One problem that has existed before the kit is my brass goes FLYING.. usually hits the wall and then hits my head.

So reading about recoil springs, and some people say that 20-22lb recoil springs should be matched with a stiffer firing pin spring. Does this mean I need to remove the lighter CGW spring from the kit and order something stiffer?

Thanks

The firing pin spring is matched to the hammer and it's spring,  so that hammer drop fully enables the "inertial firing pin" to do it's job igniting the primers used.

The recoil spring is matched to the ammunition's "recoil".
The spring needs to be light enough for the slide to reliably fully retract and then feed the next round into the chamber.   Too heavy and it may not fully retract.   This is dependent on the ammunition being fired.

On the CGW site's info on recoil springs,  the distance brass is thrown is one good measure of having a serviceable  recoil spring.  they say
 6-8 feet is good.

Recoil spring weight also affects the muzzle flip for fast follow-up shots.

Ask "schmeky" (David Milam) here on the forum so you get all the things I may have missed or  mis-stated.

I read somewhere that the additional force of a 20-22lb recoil spring can actually be enough to overcome the lightened firing pin spring.. That is my concern anyway!

The recoil spring has nothing to do with how hard the firing pin strikes the primer.
The hammer hit,  driven by the mainspring (hammer spring) is the only force besides friction that affects the firing pin.

The lighter firing pin spring is installed so you "CAN USE A LIGHTER HAMMER SPRING" and still get the primer to fire.  The lighter FP spring lets the FP move harder with a lighter hit.   This makes the trigger pull lighter in Double Action---a good thing ,  and is the reason to install the ultra light kit.

IF you put in a heavier mainspring and keep the light firing pin spring,  the firing pin can be damaged by being hit TOO HARD. The tip may break or bend or even worse >pierce the primer

Hope this make sense and helps

I'm not sure that I'm explaining my question properly:

I have the spring kit which includes s lighter hammer spring and lighter firing pin spring.

My brass is getting thrown 10' or more, way too far, so I need to increase my recoil spring weight.

The extra recoil spring weight is going to cause the slide to close harder than normal, can that combined with the lighter firing pin spring allow the firing pin to float forward and hit a primer?

No way for the FP to move forward without pulling the trigger. You have a firing pin block.
And even if the FP block was removed, I don't see how the pin could float forward with enough force to even touch the primer.
