CZ75 SP-01 Side to Side Slide Play
« on: October 20, 2015, 01:23:02 PM »
I recently purchased a CZ75 SP-01 Tactical, and one of the first things I noticed is that there is a little bit of play in the slide side to side between the frame. If I shake the gun back and forth sideways it makes a clicking sound, and you can feel the slide moving in the frame. I have a CZ75 B that doesn't have any side to side play in the slide. Is this normal for the SP-01?

Thanks!

This is not normal.  I don't know how to advise you to proceed, but it's not normal.

I guess I'll give CZ USA a call after work. I was really hoping it was normal  :(

Talked to customer service. They said that some side to side movement is normal, but if I feel it is excessive they'd be happy to check it out for me. I'm hoping some more SP-01 owners can chime in and let me know if their's produces a clicking noise when shaken side to side. It's one of those things where if other's have the same noise I can deal with it, but if I'm the only one, then I'd want it fixed.

The two SP-01's I shoot do not have much side to side play.  No rattle at all.

My 75 Shadow DOES rattle side-to-side.  It IS looser than my 75B that doesn't rattle. :-\

I'd wonder if maybe it's firing pin block vs no firing pin block, but my ShadowLine doesn't rattle.  It's tight.

Across a wide variety of CZs some will have slide to frame movement. some more than others.
CZ accuracy is because the barrel pushes up off the slide stop and is tight even with a loose slide to frame.

On my desk right now I have a P06 with slide to frame movement, and I have an ACCU Shadow that has slide to frame movement.  It accentuated a little because they guns are dry. but I do know the ACCU will still shoot 2"-2.5" at 50 yards.

Have you shot it? How it shoots would be an excellent measure of performance. Impossible to say if a gun is reliable or accurate just because the bushing or slide is loose. If the slide is moving side to side that the hammer touches the sides I would get it looked at. If it passes a function test I would shoot it.

I'm always concerned about guns that are too tight. Seen some low tolerance 1911 the couldn't put 3 rounds down range without a jam. Doesn't really matter how accurate it is at that point. My favorite 1911 has play, so does my '96 75B, they run great.

Yeah what he says^^^^
Tight doesn't mean better.   Tight fit also has it's downfalls.

If necessary have someone else better shoot it .

I'd gamble that it fine .

It definitely shoots just fine. The side to side rattle is just annoying. For instance, when I am quickly transitioning between targets on a horizontal plane, I can feel the slide moving/rattling as I transition. I've never experienced that much movement in a slide on a handgun before, which is what prompted me to ask about it here.

Hi!

Since the CZ is the almost only pistol where the grip frame rails clutch the slide rails from out (any other gun p. ex. the 1911 does this vice versa) it is easy to make both parts so tight you have to lap thrm together:
What you need is a strong vise with paddings and a little courage. Clamp, before that emptied from parts, the grip with the rails into the vise and put slightly power on the lever.
With some carefulness there is no marring or too much squeezing whatsoever. Quite the contrary when you release the vise lever the grip frame springs back and so you have to do it several times in small amounts of pressure and now and then check if the slide is still fitting in the rails or not.
If you want to lap both parts in like a custom build gun with oversized slide and frame you can do this until the slide not longer rails in.
That sounds really difficoult and dagerious but it is not.
I did this with two of my CZ75 and to the 75s from companions as well.
The requirement is the barrel to slide fit is optimal.
After squezzing the steel grip you fix it in the vise and then rail on the slide, a rubber hammer and some abrasive lapping compound makes it work in after some ellbow grease invested.
When after all the slide runs free enough in the rails you clean it all and lube, reassemble the gun and give it some 100 rounds to break in, probly a stronger recoil spring will help at the first time.
BTW this is not my invention!
The special pistolsmith working for the huge german company Frankonia which is the distributor is doing this to the cz75 ff. they where tuning up for best results because these guns are made for service and military duties and not for precise target shooting.
On the other hand is the SP1 exactly made for this purpose and therefore should not have such a loose.
Even if is a good shooter I wouldn't like the rattling either.

Best regards
Mathi

Subverto, Does your LGS or someone you know have a SP-01 Tactical you can compare yours to? My CZ 75B had no excessive clearences and a SP-01 Tactical I checked out a while back at my LGS had no issues like this either.
If you find that your CZ is a lot looser than others, I would not hesitate to send it in to have it checked out. You can't enjoy your CZ if you're always thinking there might be something wrong with it.

I agree with wd. It may shoot great, but if it's gonna keep bugging you in the back of your mind, call CZ USA.

Subverto,  a slide and a "vise" may improve the play if done by an experienced smith or machinist.  A loose slide and a vice can be a reason to have to buy a replacement upper if done by an inexperienced owner.  That steel is very hard and brittle.
