Dowchawg,
I know the feeling. I have a 1911 in .45 but didn't warm up to it, much preferring the fat double stack grip of a P-226 SIG, then a CZ-75, both in 9mm. Then a P-09 that shot like a match gun, but I still had to fatten up and ovalize the grip on it. Next was the 97, in Feb of this year. I struggled with the flat, thin grips, and even the rubber grips were not that comfortable. Finally got some fat DaveB grips, modified them slightly, and the grip feels great, the gun feels great, and I finally "like" the 97, after a lot of (expensive) rounds.
It takes a while to get used to the .45 round itself, and to find the combination of grip panels, etc., that works for you. I am finally there. I still like a 9mm but I shoot a .45 in bullseye matches now, and I'm very happy with the 97.
