TIG Welding a CZ 97 Frame?
« on: December 01, 2015, 03:06:27 PM »
Hi Guys,

I just wanted to confirm if its even a good idea to do a TIG weld a CZ 97 frame?

Like would it compromise the heat treatment on the spot/area being welded and weaken it?

The thing is I am planning to add a rail on the gun and was told by a gunsmith that it would be best to weld a rail on the frame instead of going to my original idea of having a custom aluminum rail made so it can just be screwed on the frame.

Thanks.

You don't need to have one made. CZ Custom already makes them just for the 97. And the mounting kit.

Hi cntrydawwwg,

Thanks for checking out the post.

My apologies for forgetting to mention that I am in the Philippines, and no gun store here is willing to import CGW or CZC since (According to them) its not cost effective to get single part orders from the US.

So I am off to the next best thing which is having one custom made.

That's too bad. Sorry, can't answer the welding question. Maybe shoot CZC an Email. Explain your situation. They work on these all day long, they should be able to get you squared away on what, if any welding can be done.

No harm in TIG welding on the dust cover.  We have welded new rails on a CZ frame before with excellent results.  But only do brief passes and let it cool between runs.

Hi cntrydawwwg,

You just don't don't know how bad it is. I just melt with envy knowing that you guys can have all the CGW and CZC goodies hahaha!

Hi schmeky,

Thanks for the confirmation and good advice.

It's not that I have doubts in my gunsmiths knowledge and skill (Because I wont even let him touch my gun if I do) but the Philippines is a 1911 country and the guy (My gunsmith) built his name for doing excellent work on 1911's so I thought it would be also nice to get some good feedback from this forum.

Man if I can just get my hands some CGW and CZC parts my life would have been much simpler  ;D

just order the rail from CZC and tell them it is for a camara mount and have them mark it as such in shipping  ;). I have ordered parts from Europe that can have a dual use, if your creative enough.
