Just got my first CZ.
« on: December 21, 2015, 08:51:46 PM »
So after a year or so of debating "CZ? Another Glock? More S&W Revolvers?", I finally decided on the CZ SP-01 in 9MM. Too bad for me, that NO ONE WITHIN A HUNDRED MILES stocks CZ ANYTHING, my local pawn shop has ONE CZ .22 Magnum autoloader that they got on a trade in. After weeks and weeks of being told "There are none, just get a Glock/Springfield/S&W/Ruger." I finally found a single, plain-Jane CZ-75B in stock. Decided it was time to pull the trigger even if it wasn't the one I specifically wanted. It arrived, and was given to me two days ago, along with two 50 round boxes of ARMSCORE FMJ rounds for it (12.50 a box, cheap, and brass cases are always nice to have around ;D) The very same day, I took it out, cleaned it (A 30 minute affair thanks to the wonderful instructions in the non-English manual), and proceeded to putting rounds down range.

Oooh boy. The word "Good" doesn't cut it. This particular gun came with a trigger that i'd put up against every S&W Revolver I've ever held. It wouldn't BEAT them, but it'd give them a run for their money. The pointing was perfect, the sights were... They were great except for the dull paint inlaid in the dots. Perfect size, easy to acquire (For me), but they could have left them black, or anything but that glow-in-the-dark Halloween paint. The grips are OK, a bit slippery, but shaped perfectly (My thumb sits RIGHT on top where the thumb rest is, and is extremely comfortable there.). I'm not a particularly good shot, I can hit what i'm aiming but have never been good at grouping. This gun put 11 rounds in a place the size of a tea-cup saucer firing as fast as I could from 10 yards. Yes, the gun did it, I KNOW i'm not that good.

So, now i'm here to ask suggestions. I need some sights, preferably Tritium sights, and have considered Trijicons and Mepros. I would also like a pair of grips that are less slippery, but similar in shape to the grips that come from the factory. Also, would like to CONFIRM that the 18 round mags for the SP-01 work in the 75B model, before I go spending 50 bucks on one or two.

Edit: I would also like some holster suggestions, for OWB carry, preferably something that won't wear too hard on the finish, and won't let the gun go flying out if I do one of my locally famous trip-and-fall-over-nothing acts.

TL;DR: New here, love the gun, need suggestions for improvements.

I am long winded. Ask me what my favorite gun is, I'll write you a novel. Hell, I have trouble deciding what gun to grab for when the dogs bark at night :o.

WELCOME!!

Good choice.
Check out Cajun Gun works for all the parts to upgrade. Awesome SHtuff.
Also check out Greg Cote for some Mec-Gar mags before buying original CZ. Mecgar make CZ mags & they are much cheaper.

I have a couple SP-01 18rd mags & work perfectly in my 75B. Also have the Mec-Gar 19rd w/ antifriction and it's flawless.

If you reload, you will want to check the ammo & handloading section on here. Some little things to learn about loading for the 75B.

And just between you and me... the 75B trigger ain't that GOOD out of the box. Someone may have done a trigger job in the past. CGW has parts that will get you under 8lbs Double action & Sub 3# Single action. Also if you do not like the curve of the trigger there is what's called the 85C trigger with over travel set screw. Better curce for the finger, but I believe they out of stock at the moment.

I'm counting maybe 3.5-4 pounds on mine's trigger out of the box, with a little bit of creep, but I could be wrong, and it could just be my experience with "Good" glock triggers talking. Double action is probably around 10-11 pounds. I actualy REALY like the curve of the trigger. Definitely got a longer reset than a Glock though. I've heard that the CZ has a shorter chamber throat, but this is my first 9MM ever, and thus getting used to loading for it won't be an issue, but I will DEFINITELY check out the reloading forums.

What's the difference between the standard Mec Gar 16 rounders and the anti friction magazines? Any better? Worse?

I have never had a feeding problem with any of my magazines, CZ 14's (Compact), 16's, 18's or 26'er in Steel blue. Mec-Gar 16's and one 19 antifriction. The antifriction is not necessary. I have straightened my mag strap retaining spring for drop free mags.
But if you ever make an order to CZ-USA get a spare mag follower or 2. Think they are $3. I had one hang in the cut for the mag release & break while loading. Also get a spare trigger return spring or the Lighter one from CGW.

Basic polishing of the trigger bar & related parts does wonders to feel. & it's basically free. There are a few good tutorials.

You got it on the reloading end. Short throat in the 75's. My P-01 is a little more forgiving than the 75B, but I load all to the 75B tolerances. If you cast or shoot Lead I will say to stay away from the Missouri Small Ball or that type of shape. NOE makes a few good molds with a slight step at the case mouth to help load a little longer COAL. I also have an Arsenal mold I like & slightly cheaper, 5 cavity.

Interesting. I'll look in to the anti-friction mags. My mag break is flat already from the factory, I think that's typical for the new guns?

Figured out why my trigger is fairly nice, forgot I took it apart and slip-2000ed everything. Good stuff.

What would you suggest as far as grips, and sights go? I'm leaning towards the Mepros over the trijicons, as they're 70 bucks on Amazon right now. Have no clue what I need in grips. Was leaning towards Hogue, but... Hogues tend to feel weird on anything other than revolvers.

VZ grips $75, LOK grips about $60, EZ Peachy grips $55 on eBay. All are good.

Do these have a similar feel to the plastic grips? The shape of the grips that came with it (The slight thumb rest just below the safety, specificaly) is extremely comfortable as it.

What about the rubber factory grips? Do they feel similar, without the slippery, cheapish feeling of the plastic grips?

Oh yeah, and guys, this is a work gun for me. Snakes, raccoons, and other critter defenses. I don't need, or want a hair trigger, I want a clean trigger at about 3-4 pounds, and the CZ almost PERFECTLY hits that mark, just a little creepy feeling that i'm sure I can fix with a 400 round trigger job (Either by getting used to it, or it actualy improving the gun.)

Go with the CZ factory rubber grips. They are a big improvement over the original plastic grips.

Good choice going with the factory rubber grips. I have several sets myself. Currently using Hogue Wraparound grips(75000). Automatic Accuracy sells factory rubber grips with 2 washers included. Cheapest I've seen anywhere. Hope the following links help.

Good morning gentlemen,
I got delivery of a brand new matte stainless CZ-75B late yesterday and, first thing in the morning, I field stripped it, cleaned and oiled the innards for I had shot 20 bullets to try it at the gun shop.
After 12 years non-shooting hiatus, I grouped the 20 in a hand sized group, at 10 o'clock but close to the black.
This morning, I used Break free for oiling and light Brian Enos grease on the rails.
The result was day and night from a bone dry to an oiled pistol, dry firing with a Tipton snap cap.
I agree with Ciph3r, very nice trigger....crisp single and acceptable double action, feed ramp highly polished.
Jeff Cooper long time ago, at the first trial of the gun, said that good King Wenceslas was behind the designer when he conceived the pistol.
I inquired for new springs at Wolff's but I think I will leave it as is, waiting only for a Lock grey-black set of grips that should arrive soon.
My previous experience was carrying and shooting S&W model 10 (2" and 4") and 66 (6"), Ruger GP-100 and last but not least, Walther QA-90, a sweet piece. The "B" has nothing to envy to them.
Best,
Dan
