Help me pick my first CZ Rimfire
« on: January 28, 2016, 07:27:17 PM »
So, as if my fascination with CZ handguns wasn't bad enough, I've got it in my head that I need a CZ bolt-action rimfire now.

I really like the open sights that are on the above models. But realistically, my soon-to-be-46-year-old eyes are not getting any better, and it's entirely likely that I will mount a scope on this rifle. (I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire BDC 3-9x40 that is currently on a Ruger 10/22.) However....the open sights would be good for teaching my kids how to shoot with them, and I figure I could always get an aftermarket stock that is more scope-friendly (Boyd's etc.).

Intended use would be target shooting from a bench, possibly some rifle matches, and plinking.

The above are what I can order from a few local retailers. I'm leaning toward the 452 Lux (surprised I was able to still find one), but would love to hear your opinions. Multi-caliber swapability has not crossed my mind, but I dunno, educate me if you think I should consider the 455.

Everyone has their opinions, but I like 452's better than 455's.

I would probably grab and American if I were going to mount a scope.  Some people do not get a good cheek weld with the stocks on the Trainers or the Lux.  It could be a bit of a crap shoot.  You can always grab a second CZ later.

I have a 512 with a nice Leupold scope mounted and it is a great shooter.  The trigger is much nicer than people spoke about with the early versions.  I measured mine right at 4 lbs out of the box, and it was fairly crisp.  It will never be a bench rest target rifle, but it is a great all around 22LR.

Personally, I did not notice any difference in accuracy when I bought my first 455; I have since owned 5, and still have two 455's, both in .17HMR, and they are the most accurate .17's I've ever owned.  One is consistently a .6" or .7" gun; the other is consistently a .5" to .6".

I also still own one 452 in .17HM2.  It is consistently a 1.1" or so gun.

I don't think the difference in the actions has nearly as much bearing on accuracy as the individual barrel.  I wouldn't really sweat the whole 452 vs 455 thing.

If I was in your shoes, and the irons were important to me, I would buy the 455 Trainer.  If a 455 American is available, and the iron sights aren't a big deal, I would take 455 American.  The trainer stock is OK for a scope - at least for my face; the American is better with the scope.

Having the ability to switch calibers is a plus, and I did that for a little while, but then just found myself buying more rifles....Where it is nice is changing, or upgrading barrels is not a gunsmith job - ala throwing a Lilja on.

Some will fall in love with life, and drink it from a fountain, that's pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain.

I am a big fan of the CZ 455 FS. The factory sights didn't work for me so I installed a Williams peeps and am a happy camper now.

Beautiful rifle and photography, Whaler.

To be honest, I didn't expect so much support for the 455s. I certainly do like the price of the 455 Trainer.

quasiXBL, either the FS or Trainer will make a great choice. I own one of both rifles in the 452 line and love them both.

Hey quasi, my first CZ is still my favorite 22 rifle. I've purchased and sold others but will keep my 452 Style with mueller apv scope in silver. Great looking and even better shooter in a tough weather resistant finish that lets me take it to the field whenever I'm ready, rain snow fog or dew. This one doesn't require babying.

My CZ83 in nickel also makes a great little camp gun for outings, and pairs up well with the Style. I'm hoping to find a 75 compact in nickel some day to add to the set, but so far it's been a snipe hunt trying to find one!

I'd say the 455 Trainer. I just bought one myself and am extremely happy with it. Iron sights were a "must have" even though I put a scope on mine. One of the main reasons I got it was the longer barrel (24.8", same as 452 Lux) as compared to the shorter barrel on the 455 Lux. The beech stock is quite nice. FWIW, barrel swapping was not a factor in the decision to go 455 vs 452 - I've already got more than enough calibers to keep stocked.  ;D
