Very pleased with "new" old CZ 50
« on: February 15, 2016, 01:55:29 AM »
I received my surplus CZ 50 from CDI sales in KY recently. I was pleased with both the price and the mechanical condition of the gun. The exterior finish was fairly worn - which explains why the price was lower - but the bore was rated as "very good" by CDI (though after cleaning, I would say it was more like "excellent.") The gun was made in 1970, but the bore was almost as shiny as my CZ 75 compact, which stays shinier than most of my other guns. (I bought the 75 new a couple of years ago.)

I cleaned the gun thoroughly after take down, then lubed it a bit. I finally got a chance to shoot it today, and it performed flawlessly. 50 rounds of PMC round nose in .32 acp went through without a hitch. And exceptionally accurate.  Although I can't really say "exceptionally" because the great accuracy was more the rule than the exception. :) As accurate as any gun I own at any price, at least at 8 yards...and sights were dead on (though, as others have said, rather small.) Smooth operation all the way. Then I put through 25 rounds of Winchester White Box...with a bit of apprehension. I'd heard that only round nose worked reliably in these guns, and the WWB were flat nose, but still no malfunctions. Very smooth. The only negative thing I would say about the Winchester ammo was that it seemed a bit less powerful and shot noticeably lower than the PMC at 8 yards...about 3" I'd say.

I noticed that Buffalo Bore sells some .32 "+P" in lead flat nose. Since my gun handled the WWB flat nose well, I thought I might try the BB ammo because of it's more impressive ballistics. Not really thinking of the CZ 50 as a main EDC, but it might actually might make a decent back up on occasion, though a wee bit heavy and big.

So my question is this: Have any of you tried that Buffalo Bore ammo in your CZ 50 or 70? Can the CZ 50 handle "+P" type pressures? It seems like a very solid pistol, but I'm not going to mess it up with wrong ammo if I can help it. Any input welcome. And thanks for your previous posts on the CZ 50. They've really helped.

There is no SAAMI specification for ".32 ACP +P", so how much of a beating it will give the internals of your cz50 is unknown.

Thanks. Another question: is there a best source for extra mags for this gun? Found some on ebay, but I don't know if some brands are better than others.

Euro 7.65 ammo is higher in pressure than US 32 ACP, so US made +P's will be on par with foreign ammo. The overseas made pistols were designed to handle higher pressures.
