RAMI 9mm vs. 40 s&w
« on: February 28, 2016, 12:03:33 PM »
Hi all, I am new to this forum. Just bought my second CZ. :) First one is a 75 sp-01 and the second will be a RAMI in .40 s&w. I just started my DROS. Should get the gun in another week. I am wondering if I made the right decision on the .40. I am reading that they are not as dependable as the 9mm. This may be old info. I also don't see nearly as many write ups on the .40 as the 9mm. I plan on using this for carry only. I'm not worried about the recoil. I am reading that it is manageable. Did I make a mistake??? Any help with the dependability of the RAMi .40 would be very much appreciated. Great looking gun, I love the size. Please help. Thanks, Tom

Welcome to the forum!!

If you like 40, you did not make a mistake!

The 2075 is a small gun.  I think people get into trouble when they try to make it something it isn't.  You may have problems feeding heavy, cast hunting loads, mine does.  But then, I don't use it for hunting.  Lighter, personal defense loads work great.  I have run medium power 180gr cast loads with good success, but not much heavier.

Also, the factory springs are really designed for 9mm and will get stressed much quicker in the 40.  But they are cheap, buy a couple sets of recoil springs when the web store has them on sale.

Enjoy!!

For the heavy, hard hitting loads I save for this one...

I like the 9mm over the .40 as far as caliber. I've had my rami for a while and finally got the change to shoot it yesterday, and I loved it. I went with the 9mm for a couple reasons. The first being the increased ammo capacity. The second being my SD rounds are the 124 grain federal hst rounds and they are perfect out of the 3 in rami barrel.

Did some reading on the issue just out of curiosity, and it does seem there are more issues with the .40 and a lot of people seem to have different opinions on why. Then again some say their .40 has ran perfect since day one. A good number of the complaints seem to stem from the older model 2075 versions. So if yours is a newer version maybe you'll get lucky if not I've heard cz has great customer service.

Yep, mine is an '04 .40.  From the factory, it did not like the hotter loads or the 180 gr loads.  Timing was off, slide was too fast, springs not strong enough.

Stretching springs would help for a day or two, but when CZ got it all worked out, a new set of factory springs cleared up all the feeding issues I was having.

I considered purchasing the .40 and trying to convert it to .357 Sig that way my girlfriend could carry the 9mm but I don't even know if I would have the same issues or even if it could be done.

.357 barrel comes up once in a while, here's one thread:

I remember seeing one manufacturer market them, but they seemed short lived.  Don't know if it would pay dividends in the short barrel vs the 9mm unless you are already shooting a bunch of 357.

And it probably wouldn't alleviate any of the issues that wouldn't be addressed by going to a lighter bullet in the .40.  If you are really interested in maintaining a higher sectional density, then the .357 sig barrel might be a way to go, but you'd probably need to work up your own loads to get the most out of the round in that short barrel.

Not that I'm opposed to doing that, I like shooting 250+ grain bullets out of my 45 Autos, I just need to setup the springs to work well. With those loads... ;)

You don't need a .357 Sig barrel to convert from your ..40 Rami. You can easily buy a 9mm barrel from CZ and have the barrel reamed to fit your gun. Won't work with a 9mm Rami, though. I just got back from the range with my .40 Rami and a converted 9mm barrel for the .357 Sig! Works great! Now I have both calibers. The mags are the same for both calibers. Not sure if a 9mm barrel would also work. I did try the 9mm barrel before I sent it to be converted and it fitted fine. I did not try to shoot it though! Kicks the same in both calibers.

Always seem to me that tiny little 49's show up on the used market for a reason.  If you are going to shoot it a lot it most likely won't be pleasant.  Unless of course you have huge bear arms and hands.  I'd just grab a 9mm.  If you want a 40 get something a little bit bigger.

Your choice ! If you plan to convert to .357 Sig you can't do it with a 9mm, only on a .40.
