Recoil spring grind
« on: March 13, 2016, 06:00:40 AM »
Is it just my 97 that has the rough grinding noise of the recoil spring or is that common with the factory spring? I'm not saying it's abnormal i just wish it was quieter. The slide is so smooth but when racking back the slide you can hear the recoil spring. Does anyone have an aftermarket spring that is quiet or has anyone polished the inside of the retaining bushing or the spring itself?

Never really worried about it. 6K through my 97BD now with no issues. Unless there are burrs or severe machine marks I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Perfectly normal.
I do understand what your saying about the feel and sound created by the friction points of the RS and RS Housing.
Polishing the inside of the RSH should help and could be simple if you have the tools. Not sure if the results will satisfy.

This is not very noticeable in my 97 because I CLP with Frog Lube on my CZ'z which smooth's out friction points and dramatically "quiets" the mechanical operation of the pistol.

I could be mistaken but a full length guide rod might help.

The 97 comes with a flgr already installed.

Maybe I have the wrong guide rod in mine. Mine is a 1998 model & it has a 1 3/4" plastics guide rod in it.

I don't believe that the full length guide rod allows the recoil spring to bow.

I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

They all come with the plastic guide rod from the factory. You can add a stainless guide rod if desired.

The GR does not keep the RS from rubbing on the RS Housing, even a GR that reaches the slide opening below the barrel will not keep the spring from bowing slightly.
Most guns with recoil springs make noise...My buddies Colt AR's sound like a rusty pogo stick! It's embarrassing.
If you put your ear next to the slide of my P01 and SP01 you can hear the spring compressing.
It's inherent to the system and you can only mitigate the issue.

If you've ever seen the PPQ recoil spring, it's a totally different design. The recoil spring makes no noise whatsoever. It is smooth and quiet.

I have no experience with the PPQ system but, I think it is an interesting design and worthy as a trouble shooting option. The biggest reason I have no experience with the PPQ is due to the fact the conventional CZ Polymer and SS GR and RS setup is functional, tunable and reliable.

FWIW flat wound springs are a common fix for that noise w/AR buffers. Not sure of a source for a flat wound CZ97 recoil spring though.

I dropped a DPM recoil system in my CZ P-07 Duty years ago, that was a flat wound spring in a captured setup, similar to the setup in my Walther PPS. A nice upgrade from the polymer guide rod but about $75 so not cheap. DPM website doesn't show if the CZ97 setup is a flatwound spring.
