Slim (single stack) 9mm options?
« on: April 09, 2016, 01:16:55 AM »
Now that I have my CZ-75b and my CZ-P-07, looking to round out my basic handgun tool box with a smaller gun for carry when the P-07 might be too bulky.  I'm getting rid of my PT111 G2 to fund my purchase, and because I hate the trigger on it.  The mile long takeup just doesn't work for me, so a PT709 isn't really an option.  That being the case, $400 is the upper end of my budget and I'd like to spend less.

I want to get something as close to CZ ergos as possible, as I really love my CZs.  I want something with a manual safety, as it is what I have trained with and know.  It can be debated all day, I know, but it is what it is.

I'm leaning towards a S&W Shield, and also considering a Ruger LC9s.  I want something kinda similar to a CZ trigger in single action, but can't get my hands on either of them to shoot.  I've held both, but not shot either.  I know the Shield had a heavier trigger but from what I've seen on line the stock trigger isn't horrendous although some people don't like it.  I've seen the LC9s mentioned as having one of the best triggers in a subcompact, so I'm really considering it.  I don't like the magazine safety and relatively complex takedown, and the fact it only comes with one mag.

I'm interested to hear experiences with one or both, and if there's an option I'm overlooking.

Aaawww! Too bad!  I really love mine, but I do know that the older PT111's had way better triggers, which is why I'm keeping mine. I easily qualified for my CCP with it.

Size Comparison of Taurus PT111 to Taurus PT709. Both in 9mm

That said, I would recommend the Walther PPS M2, if you can afford one.  Guns & Ammo did an extensive test of many sub-compact 9mm single stacks and you can read about it here.

If you want a very reliable Single Stack 9mm, I'd recommend the S&W 3913.

However, my CZs are decocker and the P-01 and 75 BD operate very similar to the 3913.

You would have an adjustment with the safety swiping up for fire instead of down for fire.  So, it's probably not for you............

SIg 938. 6+1 9mm SAO.

You ain't going to find much variety of pistols under $400 though. You might pick one (or something similar) up used for something close.

I am very fond of my shield (no safety) with apex bits.  Its an excellent carry piece.

Re the 938, I had one and traded it off for a scandium j frame .357 (that I carry with .38s in it) and haven't regretted it for a moment.  The trigger was horrendous and the build and parts quality is well below the price point.

I also have a dan wesson eco in 9mm.  It's an excellent carry piece but they are pretty expensive, although worth what you pay for them.

Take a look at the shields.  I think I paid about $275 new for mine a couple years back.

I have a S&W Shield 9 with the Magguts magazine modification.  The Magguts spring/follower replacement allows one extra round in the magazine so it can be carried as 8+1.  Nine rounds of 9mm ain't a bad deal in a single stack, at least for the guy carrying the gun.  A bad guy might have an issue with it though.

My 9mm carry guns are the Shield and the TriStar C100.  The C100 is slightly larger than the Shield but packs 15+1 and is faithful to the CZ compact platform.  Great choice to consider for carrying.

I'm a CZ nut and hate it that there's not a good comparable to the LC9S.  That being said I've tried every popular slim/sub out there.  The LC9S is my go to.  Using the technaclip it's the only decent gun that doesn't drag down my scrub pants that I wear 90% of the time.   It's very accurate even out to 100 feet (4-5" group). The trigger is good but not a CZ.  The grip works but not what I would call good.  The point of impact is perfect for my point of aim naturally.   I can pull it up and hit the A zone every time at 30 feet never using sights.  The shield felt better to me but hits high for me.   Much like a glock.  I hit 3-4 inches above the A zone unless I use the sights and push my wrist forward.  So out of at least 30 different subs I chose the LC9S.  It works for me.

I like the LC9s also. I've carried one for about a year now with about 1000 rounds through it and no malfunctions that weren't user-generated. I found the grip a little squirrely but a Hogue Handall Jr fixed that. Here it is next to the PCR for scale.

PPS M2

That's a nice looking pistol FJ.
Does anyone happen to have photos of a PPS M2 alongside a Shield?

Sorry I can't help you.  My pocket carry option is the Beretta Nano in 9mm and shoots like a double action only revolver.  Long and stiff; works great for me in that role. O0

Definitely "aint no CZ", but I think even a manual safety type of guy can figure out how to make it go bang in the heat of a stressful moment up close and personal.

The new Springfield Armory EMP4 looks pretty awesome to me, single stack nine 1911 with the safety you expect. And the previous smaller version. Way over your price range unfortunately.

Look into a Star M-43, (9mm) Firestar is a nice (heavyish), tough as nail single stacker
Nice shooting, accurate (for a sub-compact), reliable little Gun
