Seating magazines at speed reliably
« on: April 19, 2016, 01:38:00 PM »
Had a bit of an " Ah Ha!" Moment about how I think about my reloads which sped me up a bit and made me more consistent.  Applies to both games.

The gentleman in the video,  points his muzzle straight up for the reload.
I would suggest trying:   drop the mag, and  rotating the pistol 80 +/- degrees clockwise (for right handers)  "holding the last shot position".  Use the method shown for a firm insert that will release a CZ 75 slide,  then rotate the pistol back  to the shooting position and sight alignment --bang.

I am that guy and I am totally open to feedback.  That presentation of the mag well has netted me the best consistency and speed but I am totally open to new better ways... Video or photo of what you are talking about?

Sorry Dave,  asleep at the wheel...again.
I was 'counselled'  :) some time back about "keeping the muzzle pointed down range" doesn't mean straight up.

There are a number of U-Tube  USPSA known guys videos showing mag fast changes.  I don't even know for absolutely sure that what I was told is letter of the law;  but it did make sense..  Ted Bonnet told several of us once,  that he was in a match overseas where spectators were on high ground "around" the target area. ;D

The idea of keeping the pistol up high  and near sight alignment as you push out also made sense.

Here's some videos of Ben Stoeger (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Production Nationals Champion).  Probably one of the best in the game at economy of motion.

I will video my practice and see what's the issue, I am a little more straight up and down than Ben for sure, especially in the last video, he is more vertical in the top 2

For me, I am closer to what Ben is doing, in that my magazine opening is canted over. Years of single stack made sure I had to hit it right the first time, with not a lot of margin for error.  Using a double stack is like a wide open lake  O0   Having said that I am not particularly fast, just consistent.  If I am standing and doing a reload I have failed somewhere in my plan. LOL
