Brand New 83
« on: May 01, 2016, 12:20:04 PM »
I purchased a CZ 83 yesterday that I plan to give to the wife for SD and HD. Fit, finish, and trigger are excellent. The DA is amazing. I can't wait to get it to the range for a shakedown cruise.

The only drawback I see is the front sight. OK for SD, but target shooting will be an issue for her IMO. I plan on adding a FO front from CZ. Any recommendations for size of the rod? I have a FO front on my P01 but cannot locate the paperwork showing me the size. Any help appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it, my 83 is a tack driver with the original front sight.

CZ fibre optic sights are usually 1,5 millimetres in diameter  (0,0591 inches) but there is an option for 1 mm (0,0394 inches). It's probably down to personal preference

Personally,  after almost 20 years I've just ended up painting my CZ83 front sight with orange model paint and it's good for me

I appreciate the info. Not worried about me as much as I am about her eyesight. She is a newb, but very competitive. We'll definitely go stock sight first. If there is an issue, red or orange paint, and then FO. I saw Hickok shooting a borrowed 82 that the owner had painted the front sight red.

I had to sneak it into the house last night and hide it. Couldn't get her to leave today so I could clean it and get it range ready. That will likely come next weekend.

Congratulations! I had CZ82 and CZ83 years ago, and sold them both.  They were absolutely the most accurate pistols I ever owned (especially the CZ83!)  I missed it so badly, I bought a current (2015) production CZ83 .380 a few months ago, and am as happy as a clam.  It (loaded with 14 rounds of Buffalo Bore 300 ft lb +P JHPs) has replaced my Glock 19 9mm as my EDC weapon, I am a retired LEO, and carry all the time.

Enjoy!

I made it to the range yesterday with some of the factory gunk still on the pistol. The pistol is a tack driver and functioned flawlessly. Best trigger out of the box I've had, along with my P01. I sent 100 rounds of Fiocchi and Winchester 95 gr. FMJ down range at 7 and 10 yds.(50-50), strong (60) and weak hand (40) while standing. Despite having not shot since Christmas and eyes watering due to allergies, I kept all but 12 shots within hand width. I was blown away b/c I am not that good!

The pistol is a little more snappy than my son-in-law's Sig P232. I got a little bite from the beavertail 2-3 times but attribute that to a poor grip. Thank heavens I bought an Uplula. I struggled to get more than 5 rounds into the mags. without it.

Sights were not a problem until about 40 rounds to go when my eyes really started watering. Target acquisition slowed considerably. IMO one dot of red paint on the front sight will help tremendously, especially for the wife. IMO she is going to love it.

Cleaned it this morning. The trigger guard was much easier to release than prior to shooting. I can't wait to get it back to the range with some Gold Dot or Federal JHP and stretch it out to 15 yds. I have found a KEEPER!

Although the sides of the base will need to be dressed with a file as all of them do, the original CZ75 front sight works great.

I took your advice and purchased the FO front from CGW, but have yet to install. I am anxious to see the results

I bought the FO front sight and installed them myself, once I bit the bullet and bought an armorer's block. I went to the range today and stunk. Great sight picture, but I stunk! Poor trigger work, anticipating recoil and not controlling my breathing. Things were better as I went along, but jeez, I acted like a newb. I actually shot the XDm .40 more accurately. And it is my least favorite to shoot. Nevertheless, just chalk it up to a bad day. Better days are ahead! I know what the pistol is capable of doing, now to get my butt in gear.

Thanks, Hillbilly for recommending the sights from CGW.

I bought our first CZ 83 at the Nellingen Barracks Rod and Gun Club (near Stuttgart, Germany)  for my wife and she really disliked the sharp recoil. She much preferred my pre-B CZ 75 at the time and still does prefer any of our 9mm Para pistols over the .380 CZ 83.  She does, however, like the CZ 83 in .32 ACP (7.65mm Browning).

A Wheeler #672215 made of polypropylene. It worked well for me.

Recoil is a concern and the .380 has a bit of bite. The .32ACP would have been a better fit for her IMO. I jumped on the last CZ 83 that Bud's had. Live and learn. She is on her 3rd shooting trip tomorrow and still getting used to something going BANG in her hands. If we have to go to 9mm, she's never shot it but likes the feel of my P 01 (gulp) over the 75B when the Kadet is mounted.
