Just tested my new CZ-97B
« on: May 28, 2016, 07:14:19 PM »
Received it yesterday from gun store, cleaned, and took today to the outdoor range for a test.
Gun is brand new and I only have replaced grips to rubber ones from CZ-USA and lock-tight the LCI. Shot 100+ factory rounds S&B 230 FMJ and Federal AE 230 FMJ. Also tried some reloads that my friend had. Tested on 50m, 100m, 200m on paper and full size metallic silhouettes.
Gun shoots like most bone stock CZ-75s. 5-6" groups at 50m from rested position. Was hitting reliably (90%+) 100m targets and got about 30-40% hits on 200m. Sights are too high and a little to the left ~11 o'clock. Not a bullseye gun yet for sure.
Sights have to go first. Red dot will be mounted instead. Then make some more once fired brass. I will try loading some target ammo and see how its breaking in. Bushings replacement is very real possibility. I wish CGW had offered home replaceable bushings similar to their 10X but for CZ-97B. Trigger job is also in the future. Right now SA pull on the trigger is about 5lb and long, but not gritty.

I have never shot Bullseye competition so please pardon my ignorance.
Is it common practice to the evaluate a bullseye pistol at 100M and 200M?
What do you learn about the pistol at these distances?

I hope your 97 works out for you.

Your POI and trigger are just like my new 97 B. The included target, dated 4/16/16, showed a POI just like I'm getting. Mine has 300 rounds now and doesn't seem picky about bullet types for cycling or accuracy.

For BE you don't need accuracy beyond 50 yards, but my background is also metalic silhouette shooting and handguns there shot from 25 to 200 meters. I also was testing it on my home club silhouette range, so targets were present and why not? Everything about your pistol, sights and skills multiply when you shot longer than normal pistol range distances. Small mistake on 20 ft, will go unnoticed, but on much longer distance will show as feet or yards away. I enjoy occasionally testing standard smallbore pistol one handed on 100 m and hiting most of the targets. This pistol by any streach is not silhouette pistol and not even bullseye pistol yet, but having the opportunity to try it shows its potential for improvement and provide the baseline to compare with tunning results later on.

Thank you for your reply.
I was completely unaware of pistol silhouette games out to 200M. That's impressive.
I'm not sure that I'm still even be able to see a target at that distance without magnification.

Targets are bigger than bullseye target at that distance. 200m full size Ram is close to the size of the life animal. There are also reduced targets 1/2, 3/8, 1/5, (1/10 - airgun) scale for different distances and categories. Some hard to see without the powerful scope (20X -40X). If you superimpose those targets to standard precision pistol targets, they will equal in angular size  to X ring and some parts of animal target protrude to 10 ring. Normally pistols used for MS silhouette competitions are single shot and more accurate than most rifles. They think they are rifles and some are actually made from bolt rifle actions with pistol grips.

Gotcha, the Thompson Contender came to mind as I thought of BE with a pistol at those distances.

That's right. My tuned TC G2 .22 12" match barrel is one of 1MOA pistols, brought me many perfect scores. But its not for rapid fire stage in BE  :(

.22! Again an impressive feat with that caliber for long range accuracy. Right away I was  thinking TC .22-250 at distance.
Thanks for the information. I will definitely check out some BE games.

Boris--that sounds like a good first outing to me.  New 97 sounds promising.

I will miss next month's BE match due to a family trip planned the same weekend.  I am going to take some time over the next few weeks to shoot from a bench.  Last time I tried it with the P-09 and P-07, I had bad results.  It's me, not the gun.  Apparently, the only way I can shoot one accurately is to use a wrist rest and get the gun completely free of any contact with the table or rest.  With the P07, I had the extended magazine bases on and was resting the magazine on the rest.  Not good.

I had completely forgotten about even trying silhouette steel at 200 meters.  We have steel out to 100 here at our local range.  I might try that too during my "off" weeks.  Then back to BE with the 97.  Can't wait.

Thats how i test guns or ammo too.
We currently running 1800 matches and I use Cz75 SP-01 for centerfire part, but plan is to have later 2700 matches My CZ97 should be ready by that time.

"I only have replaced grips to rubber ones from CZ-USA"

I just replaced mine with the rubber grips also, and love them. The aluminum grips were too thin for my big hands, and now all my CZs have essentially the same grip.

Mine was Californian (old) version with wood grips. They look good, but rubber feels better and consistent with all my other CZs.

Yeah, that consistency was very important to me. Prior to putting on the rubber grips, my 97 just didn't feel like a CZ. Of course, I'm a big guy with big hands, and so the fuller shape makes a lot of sense for me, but might not for others. Frankly, it's another reason why I'm down on my 1911s, i.e., grips are too thin.

[Heck, it I could design my own CZ, I would take the 97 design and fatten the grip so as to accommodate a 14-round magazine, and also make it 10mm. I bet that would fly off the shelves.]

Sooltauq, I added rubber palm swell grips and an arched msh to my 1911(10mm). Not quite a CZ but feels good enough to shoot full power loads all day long. I tried a 97b the other day for the first time. Wow that's a soft shooting gun, a fully tuned 97BE must be amazing. I wish it was available in 10mm as well.
