About to acquire CZ-83 from Gunbroker - What to do?
« on: June 02, 2016, 12:42:42 PM »
Acquired a CZ-83 for $200 during CDI's UGLY GUN sale on Gunbroker. It will be showing up at my FFL today. Finish will be almost completely gone, but gun should be good to go. Nonetheless, I want to get it checked out first. What key points/parts should I look at before taking it out to the range?

Given the state of the finish, I plan on rebluing it, unless another finishing method is recommended. I'm also having a devil of a time finding a holster and some new grips. Holster I'll probably just have made - StealthGearUSA is maybe a mile away. As for grips, I'd like to do wood or aluminum.

I'm checking out other threads now, but most of the grip stuff I found wasn't recent.

I have both a CZ82 (9 mm Makarov) and a CZ83 (.380 ACP).
My CZ83 was NIB so finish is fine.
The CZ82 on the other hand was painted (not blued) and it's flaking off.  I am considering having it hard-chrome plated rather than blue.
Its grips needed replacing so I order a set from Antonin Marschal in Hungary back in February.  They just arrived yesterday.  His grips are highly in demand, but you have to wait for them as he is swamped with orders.

As they arrived at my home in Houston and I'm working at a remote construction site, I won't be getting them to put on my CZ82 for a couple of weeks.  I will be sure to post pictures, though.

Congrats on the pick up. The Marschal grips are well worth their waiting time. I find that the grips with thumb rest and finger grooves, while "girthy" in the hand, soak up the snappiness that some shooters experience with these pistols. They are quite expensive relative to the price of a surplus 83 but so long as you're going to blue the pistol, might as well dress it up. Prestige Grips offers a nice carbon fiber option that's a little less expensive and with a shorter wait time than Marschal grips.

I'm not an expert with what internal parts to examine but I'd say to give it a good look over, cleaning, lubing, and some dry fire to check general mechanical operation before range time. Looking forward to some photos and a range report.

Have had about 11 sets of M grips and all where great.  82 and 83 are the same grip in case you did not know that when looking.
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

Yes, I knew they were the same grip size. My CZ83 was NIB so its grips are fine. The CZ82 however was military used and is well worn.
