PCR vs Sphinx SDP Compact
« on: June 13, 2016, 11:08:45 PM »
Those of you who have owned both, would you mind sharing your opinions? I am looking for a CCW and am leaning toward the P-01 or the Rami. But I want to get some opinions on the Sphinx. There's not much info about it online. Really, the Sub-compact would be best but I heard there were some reliability issues with it?

Thanks.

I owned a CZ P02 for a while, and I know it's not the PCR, but I personally like the Sphinx better than the P02. The fit and finish on the Sphinx are superb and I love the Sphinx's trigger.   I would love to see some more aftermarket parts availability, but I think that as the Sphinx gains momentum, we'll see more aftermarket stuff hit the market.

Now, to play devils advocate to myself,  you could find a nice PCR and have CZC or CGW do a full trigger kit and you will have a gun with a better trigger, more aftermarket parts availability and a broader range of holster options, than the Sphinx.  Probably, around the same cost.

Just my two cents,  but I hope it helps!

Can't comment on the Sphinx but I've carried the PCR for 7 years and love it. I've added CZ custom sights and a CGW hammer and spring kit and have less invested in an all metal gun compared to the plastic Sphinx.

I wouldn't call the Sphinx a plastic gun.  The slide is case hardened steel, while the part of the frame that houses the fire control group and the rails that the slide rides in are all aluminum.  The only plastic component is the grip. It would be like calling an AR plastic because the grip isn't metal.

Yea it's a 3 pc design with the lower grip assy being plastic. Not exactly a traditional all metal gun either. Just not my cup that's all.

I agree that it's not for everyone. I like the feel of the Sphinx, not the price. I think that for the value, you're 100% right. The PCR with the upgrades is hands down a better package.  I hate that I'm looking at spending $60 for a new front sight (the only one on the us market that I know of).

The Sphinx model with the "plastic grip" is more like an STI gun than a polymer frame gun. They also make a Sphinx model that has an all aluminum frame. It is also available in a kind of "semi-compact" model - full size grip with compact upper. I have both plus a subcompact model (plastic lower frame).

  • Is it broken? Then why are you fixing it?

I've owned an SDP Compact in Krypton for quite some time now. Have over 1200rds thru it. Id say that if your P-01 was a sports car, the Sphinx is a hyper car. You're comparing a similar operating design with a completely different method of completion. First off, the fit and finish of a sphinx is similar to a dan Wesson vbob, except there is more attention to the tiny details. There is no chatter among any parts. Totally smooth. Tight. Now, the three part design that makes this gun almost totally different, is like this: tool steel slide mates to an aluminum or steel upper frame, while the lower frame comes in three material types: polymer, aluminum or steel. I decided on the aluminum because I hate polymer when they make you spend the money for it. Glocks are ok and the p07 is 'awesome' but the Sphinx is not something you buy with polymer. The all steel models have some pretty good heft to them, but maintain the alloy of choice for many Cadillac esq. handling of the weapon, but it shoots very nicely. And the aluminum frames like mine are really picked because I wanted something I could run around with at the steel range and still manage an iwb carry if I decided I didn't want to carry the compact 1911 that day. Similarly handling, good sights and seriously accurate in comparison to my Czs. And I'll be very honest, if you're gonna get the gun for shooting, it will hold up to just that. It takes a licking and still to date. Haven't had as much as one single hiccup. I can also say the same for my p-01 and compact d as well. This thing also has a full size grip but compact barrel and slide. 17+1. BUT, you cannot compare a street car to a track car without doing the work to the street car that makes it comprable. My .02.
Wife: Is it broken?
Me: No.
Wife: Then why does it need to be fixed?
Me: I knew you wouldn't understand.
Me: You're way smarter than I am babe.
Wife: Ok, so if it's not broken and not fixed, what exactly is it?
Me: It's taking time Hun. Just taking some time.
