Will CZ Ever Make A 97 With Ambi Decocker
« on: June 15, 2016, 04:12:35 PM »
Hey Guys,

Like the subject states: Will CZ ever make a 97 w/ambi decocker?

I know the 97bd is available, but as a left-handed shooter this does not benefit me. A while back I sent Stuart from CZ Custom an email asking him this same question. At that time, he stated he highly doubts it. I own several CZ's in 9mm including the SP-01 Tact 75b sa & and a clone, Canik Stingray. The Tact is by far my favorite CZ. LOVE the ambi decocker on it.

In 45 acp, I have a Springfield Armory 1911 A1, RIA 1911 officer model, FNX 45 and Glock 21 gen 4. Oh no, did he say that word. I have been wanting a CZ 97 for quite awhile now. I just hope someday soon CZ will make one with ambi decocker. A CZ 97 w/ambi decocker would complete my collection. Is there any other forum members that feel like I do?

Personally I would not be interested in ambi controls on my 97BD but you could float the question to CZ-USA and see what they have to say. They would be privy to that info before anyone else I would think.

I asked this very same question to CZ-USA approx 2 years ago, and at that time, they said there were no plans to do so. I will contact them and ask again. You never know.

I would also check with David at Cajun Gun Works.  There was a recent post from him about adding ambi safety to CZ75 pistols.  This might also include dockers and be adaptable to CZ97 pistols.

I saw that post you you are referring too. I believe it was adding an ambi safety to a 97 not a 75. I spoke to David about that exact post and he told me they(CGW) do not do that modification any longer.

Is this the thread you are referring to?

I only ask because it was fairly recent.

Yes that is it. That post is dated 03/25/16 and the previous posts were from 01/2013. Quite a bit of time in between. That's the exact post I talked with David about.

When I saw that post of David fitting a ambi safety to the 97 I got excited and immediately spoke with him about it. That's when he told me they do not offer that mod any longer. Needless to say, I was bummed.

I guess I don't understand why it would be so difficult.  Couldn't you fit a SP01 Tactical Ambi lever to the 97BD frame?  All you need is the decocker lever protrusion on the right side then you could add the SP-01 Tactical ambi lever.  I don't know how much wider the 97BD frame is as compared to the SP01 Tactical?  It seems relatively easy but maybe I'm missing something?

Looking at the parts finder at CZ-USA, the 97BD and 75BD decocker lever are the same part.  So the 20 million dollar question is whether the 97BD will accept the SP01 Tactical lever?  I could try this at home as I have both guns.  Maybe not tonight but this weekend if anyone is interested.

Cheers,
Toby

I am under the impression that the longevity of the added safey/decocking lever is questionable.  This is an assumption on my part. I cannot think of any other reason why CGW would discontinue offering the upgrade.

I think that would be awesome if you did that. I have wondered about that myself. Please do that and let us know what you find out.

So I pulled my SP01 Tactical decocker lever out and installed it in the 97BD today.  Here is what I found:

https://youtu.be/ydgHGMcktS4

It seems to fit and function without any modification.

I took a side by side picture of the two levers:

The upper is the stock 97BD lever and the lower is the SP01 Tactical lever.  I took some measurements with my calibers and the shaft diameter is the same between the two.  The left side boss that supports the lever in the frame is the same.  The frame width between the 97BD and SP01 Tactical is the same.  The right side hole in the frame is the same.  The 97BD lever has a small diameter section on the end of the shaft, I couldn't tell you why but it is the only difference between the levers (aside from the length and ambi lever for the SP01 Tactical).

There you have it, I did not do any live fire with this setup but wouldn't anticipate any glitches as a result of the decocker lever.  All you lefties out there should try it out, it would be a relatively inexpensive mod to improve ergonomics.

Cheers,
Toby

Let me get this straight. The Ambi decocking levers are drop in for the 97?

tdogg,

Just finished watching your video. All I can say is THANK YOU for doing that. Your video left me speechless. I guess the real test would be to go and put some rounds through. PLEASE do not do this. I would feel awful if something terrible happened to your 97bd.

I wonder why this has never been before. Maybe David or Stuart will read this post and watch your video and chime in with some answers. If this can work for the long term with no internal hiccups, I may just do this myself.

Again, thank you tdogg for taking the time to do this.
