CZ 455FS or Ruger 77/22~~.22WMR
« on: June 30, 2016, 10:43:26 PM »
I'm a fan of Mannlicher stock rifles (Ruger 10/22 #1264 Talo Stainless), and am trying to decide between the

CZ455FS  or
Ruger 77/22

in .22 WMR.

Pricing is in the same general area with careful shopping.  Both get great reviews, they look similar beyond the "dropped" rear of the CZ stock versus the straight comb of the Ruger.  Both will be scoped, primary use is target shooting at the range with plinking and some small pest control duties added.  Both seem to have good to excellent (and adjustable) triggers and full factory support.  I probably won't do much in the way of customization beyond the scope and sling.  The Ruger does have the flush magazine, but the drop down magazine of the CZ does not bother me in any way.

I have had great enjoyment with other products from both companies (75B + Kadet, P-07 Duty) (10/22, Single Six, Blackhawk, Speed Six) and believe them both to be of excellent quality and well worth their prices.

I've completely eliminated the low end of the market (Ruger American, Savage) and the top end (Browning T Bolt, Mag Research).

Interestingly, on my Ruger Forum, the Ruger guys are tending to the CZ side by a wider margin than I'd have expected.  They like the bolt, finish, stock, and general feel.  There are some feelings against the sloped stock.

I'd appreciate any insight from the cognoscenti on this important purchase!

Thanks

I love my 452 FS. I shoot it with both the stock open sights and a Leupold 4x fixed on Warne QD rings. The dropped stock doesn't bother me.

If you're the kind of shooter that has to have a perfect cheek weld to use a scope you might not like the CZ stock.

The advantage of the CZ is you can also run it in two other calibers with barrels from CZ or Lilja.

Sorry, probably not a lot of help.

I was also wondering about the cheek weld as I use scope mounts that allow for iron sights under the scope - old eyes!  I've never used a slip on "pillow", but it seems like the drop would allow you to "back down" the stock to bring the iron sights into view.

I've heard that the bolt is a real piece of art.  Have you found this to be true?

How about the safety, it seems "backwards" from the U.S. manufacturers way of doing them?

Thanks

I find no need to use a riser. I just move my head up a little and the lower part of my cheek is on the stock. I use medium rings and remove the scope to use the irons.

I don't know about art. I've seen some jeweled CZ bolts that were certainly art. The 455 and 452 bolts are slightly different in that the 455 only has one lug, but they are very nice and smooth up after a couple of bricks. Some sit in a chair and work the bolt while watching tv. A little lubrication can work wonders. They share the same safety which is reversed from what some find 'normal'. I just know that it works the other way. Some find the safeties a bit stiff when new. There's an easy fix if that turns out to be the case.

I have other mil-surp rifles that all work differently. You just have to know your hardware. I don't consider it a factor, never mind a big deal.

My eyes didn't like the factory rear sight so I added a Williams peep, works much better.

I have nothing against Ruger, but I'd go with the 455FS. I have a 452FS, and love it so much that I'm adding a full-sized FS (or two!) to the stable, and am considering a 455FS in .22WMR or .17HMR in the future. They're lovely rifles to look at and use, and they're quite accurate. You won't regret it!

I had exactly the same problem ! So i bought the Ruger 77/22 in .22WMR with the Manlicher stock because I read somewhere that Ruger was discontinuing the 77/22, and it was a good price. But I couldn't stop thinking about the 455FS and the ability to switch barrels so I orderd a 455FS in .22LR. When it arrived the Ruger was relegated to the gun safe and I have taken the 455FS to the range evry week..I LOVE IT ! In fact I love it so much I decided I couldn't bear the thought of messing with it to switch barrels, so I bought a 455FS in .17HMR.
I have scoped all three of them and don't have any problems with the stocks on the CZ's, just a little different cheek position to the Ruger but perfectly comfortable. The 455FS .22LR has had a few hundred rounds through it now and is shooting one ragged hole at 25 yards. I need to go to another range with a 50 yard lane to see how it performs there.
I have read that CZ's are like potato chips "nobody can have just one" so I have on order a 455 Thumbhole stock with the fluted barrel. Yes I am a CZholic and it all started with a CZ75 and a couple of P07's
