Help! How do I remove this barrel bushing? Very lost.
« on: July 15, 2016, 03:59:11 PM »
Hello everyone,

I want to try out this CGW 10x bushing on my Cz custom 75 shadow target ii. I have the front sight pin off, and the gun disassembled - the issue is I have no real way to get that bushing off.

I know you must hit it from the inside, and I have a 11mm 1/4 inch socket. But how do you apply the right pressure? There's no way to hit it...

Maybe someone could post a link to a tool? Thanks

Thanks! Unfortunately, I saw this one though. I still dont get how he removed it. When you insert the socket - even an elongated one that protrudes, only a mm or two protrudes allowing it to be hit.

Its not enough surface area to get a good hit on. I called David at CGW asking for tech support - he kept describing the need for "two 6 inch 1/4th drive extensions" me being puzzled at what that was seemed to tick him off.

Nothing off google images appears useful. You have to hit the bushing down out the muzzle face - the side minus the firing pin mechanism isnt 6 inches. So I dont see what 6 inch socket tool there is out there to use?

In the example the OP used a 14" rod. You can see it in the picture with the heat gun. I'm thinking David is talking about putting Two 6" drive extensions together so you have a 12" drive bar.

Have you tried heating the slide or using a penetrating oil?

I used a 14" long steel rod and placed it into the back of the 11mm socket. The bushing was still not moving very much so a brought out the el cheapo heat gun and heated the area just behind the bushing, don't heat the bushing, heat the slide behind the bushing. This helped greatly in loosening up the bushing and it drove right out with little effort.

Use the 1/4 inch drive 11mm socket with the 1/4 inch drive side toward the bushing. Rod/extension goes in the 11mm side so you can tilt the rod ever so slight to get a good swing with a hammer. Use 3/8 drive extension or similar size bar stock. Look at the pics again and you'll understand. If you have been putting 1/4 inch drive extension in the socket as you would to remove a nut, screw, bolt, etc. you would be doing it wrong and it won't go in the slide properly. If this explanation doesn't help you.....take it to a gunsmith.

This member used a similar method.  If you're familiar with an auto-body dent puller then this will be easy to understand.  Scroll down near the bottom where the pics and explanation are.  Just below this post is the reminder :Remove the front sight pin and sight before pulling the bushing. O0  Looks like you could use a piece of 3/4"steel pipe for the "Weight" /  hammer.

Going to guess you don't have a slide hammer as shown above. I do if you are close to Plainfield Ill. You are welcome to use it. But if that dosent work and you are going to use the socket and extension they make a "wobble" extension. It allows the socket to flex a little and would give you some more room to work with. Its not even a pro type of tool. You can buy one at Harbor freight or Ace hardware.

Making the slide hammer puller:  socket that fits the bushing, threaded rod,  two nuts, two washers and a piece of pipe to hammer it out. :-\

You would need to tape some of the threads as the pic showed to protect the slides surfaces.

  • Is it broken? Then why are you fixing it?

The explanation cannot be anymore clear. Please bring your firearm to a trained professional sir.
Wife: Is it broken?
Me: No.
Wife: Then why does it need to be fixed?
Me: I knew you wouldn't understand.
Me: You're way smarter than I am babe.
Wife: Ok, so if it's not broken and not fixed, what exactly is it?
Me: It's taking time Hun. Just taking some time.

I can't get mine to budge. I've read all the posts here and elsewhere.  I've frozen and heated with heat gun, used penetrating oil and whacked it with a BFH. I've got a heavy duty vise with wood to hold secure but no luck.  Shot 200 rounds at the range without the sight pin installed and still nothing.
