CZ P09 IDPA continuing update
« on: August 20, 2016, 08:21:25 PM »
I'm going about 3 months on with the new P09 and have logged about 1300 rounds since I first brought it home. So far I've competed in 3 IDPA matches and with the exception of just a very poorly designed stage I was always in the top 5 even winning a stage outright with it.

Last Saturday was our club's Classifier and we worked it but didn't get an opportunity to shoot so today one of the other Match Directors and I headed to the range with props and ammo!

First ever Classifier with it I hit 101.10 getting about 12 seconds from Master and solidly in Expert. I know exactly where I can shave a few seconds off and my Stage 3 was a little rough adding a bit to the time. All in all I could not be happier with the gun! My only regret is not buying one sooner!

Congrats- good shooting!

We completed day 1 of the Wa state IDPA match, where I'm one of the safety officers on staff. I saw quite a few CZs go through my stage.  We have 6 more squads tomorrow & we'll see the scores and standings

As an SO, we shot yesterday- not my best performance, but was fun. Shot my P09 & it did its job well, it was me who fumbled at times.

Agree the P09 is a great gun, am glad I got mine :D

Awesome! I was wondering when that match was and how it was going! Looking forward to hearing more about it

Right now it is me and 2 of my friends, Jeff and Brent, that have CZs and will use them in IDPA. Brent hasn't gotten his out in a while so it is just Jeff and me that are holding down the fort...but I've had several people ask me about the P09 and I expect to see more of them!

I have a 75B, a P-07, a P-09 and an SP-01 Tactical and I think my P-09 is my favorite of the four.  They all excel at one thing or another but other than for concealed carry, the P-09 is just hard to beat.  Mine is FDE with the Tritium night sights.  They are a little blunt for my taste but I do most of my shooting off hand at 50 yards.  My Tactical is suppressor ready with the taller sights.  They actually present a little better sight picture but the trigger on my P-09 is better.

With the Omega trigger system, a little tuning can produce a really nice trigger.

Ok a quick run down on some of the more interesting of the 13 stages :-)

We had 2 stages with moving targets, both ingeniously crafted by our local carpenter genius, 2 stages with shooting from the wobbly bridges, a stage shooting from a treadmill, 2 stages with swinging targets, along with a few long range targets and several pepper poppers.

Was honored that one of my stages was selected for the match. Some of the shooters were simply amazing, negotiating the stage with blazing speed and superb accuracy. The most accurate shooter was only 13 points down for the entire match.

Working on staff was exhausting, but rewarding. Glad I did it.

Isn't that about the way it goes? All that work, time spent doing it instead of other stuff...but once you've been a part of that bigger picture...bleeped if  you don't want to do it all over again! I feel that way every time I'm a match director LOL lots of work always worried that I've made terrible decisions...and when it goes off it is fantastic to have been a part of it!

I've been kicking it back and forth and it is probably going to be a P07 in my future to carry! I love my Glock 34 and I know the G19 is one of the greatest  pistols ever made...but I just have so much more fun running the P09 that it may now very well be my favorite pistol of all time! :D

Had a heck of a match on Saturday. The bad was 2 failure to feeds but I think I've had a die on the reloading press get out of tolerance and it caused some case issues. Went Down 15 on 2 moving targets...had to Tap/Rack the FTF and by that time those 2 were long gone. Then I had a bum ankle turn into a really REALLY BAD ankle and I thought I was done despite laying a whooping on the first 2 stages of the match. But the CZ's brand of awesomeness and accuracy saw me to a Best for the Match Down 23 (even with Down 15 on the one stage)! I know I say it every time I post...but bleep I love that P09 the more I shoot it!

Nice to know the gun performs even when you don't or if you feed it wrong ;D

I'm likely to retire my P09 for this year's season- got a P01 Omega at CGW waiting for his magic. Also want to give my GP 100 some IDPA loving ;D

I'm actually signed up to shoot in a Tier 2 match in Illinois next month so I'm on the P09 train for a while it would seem! Not that I want to retire it because I do have a few like you that need some off-season attention, but I'm amazed more and more on how well this thing runs. I finished 3rd of 47 shooters even with that disaster of down 15 plus I had another issue so I hit the reloading bench hard to make sure I wasn't getting anything out of spec. Gun was 100%...my reloads...not so much LOL

Be sure to keep posting when you do make the switch for a bit and let us know how you are doing with it!

DustyDawg48 et al posts are interesting.
P-09 is new to me.  I am liking to hear competition topics regardless if the P-09's are stock or not. I don't do IDPA or steel challenge type club matches of that type recently.  I have smacked some bowling pins (six pins) for what I call informal club matches.  Gee, that means only six (6) fired shots with club rules.  Those boys don't do "registered" match competition (e.g. IDPA). Some different people do cowboy stuff.  In summary, I was not focused on IDPA for much of this text.  IDPA stands for "I Don't Practice Anymore", right?  I used to be a serious introvert until two years ago. I hope that I did not offend anyone regarding my bad IDPA joke.  If anyone gets steamed, do not insult me badly.  I am liking my P-09 and I plan to look for P-09 IDPA updates and other posts written in expository prose.

Aha! Great thread. I have been trying to decide whether to run a Pro Grade Cajunized P-09 or a Cajunized SP-01 in IDPA.

I have an SP-01 Safety model to use as long as I want to. I shoot DA/SA so I do not ever use the safety. It has the gold hammer spring. I have to see if it has the lower power (shorter) firing pin spring or not, I do not know at this moment.  It also has a stainless steel guide rod with a .044" round wire recoil spring - I have been told that is the stock force rated spring (16 lbs if my memory is correct). The action is SMOOTH SMOOTH, however, the travel and reset are long compared to the Sig P226 short reach and short reset trigger I am used to. I will have to make more mods/improvements to the SP-01 to get it fully Cajunized like the P-09 already is.

I am set up to purchase a fully Pro Grade Cajunized P-09.  I have never handled one so that will be a new experience.

What do you guys recommend all in all with regard to these two choices, in terms of:
1. Ability to shoot accurately "easily"
2. Ability to improve easily
3. Ability to work on and maintain easily
4. Long life
I am a double Sig Armorer (Classic series hammer fired as well as the P320 striker fired) and a Glock Armorer so I am handy with pistols, BUT I have never gone to CZ Armorer school.

David says the P-09 is up and coming.  David and long time CZ shooters have told me the SP-01 has been the way to go. You guys obviously favor the P-09.  What do you recommend to a Sig guy converting over to CZ - the P-09, the SP-01 or Both?  Note - if I buy the SP-01 after getting the P-09, my Sig P320 will probably have to be sold because I am not a millionaire.

I look forward to hearing your wisdom!!

I am liking posts here for reasons.  I am not a "smith"--not very technical but I have technical friends.  I will stay with a stock P-09 for now rather than accumulate subsets of parts too soon.  I am just an instructor who talks about safety to hunter education students and others.  I met Dave Miller (CZ) at a workshop and also talked with CZ's "Rich" this year.  I talked with "Rich" about old school Dan Wesson revolvers before CZ got involved.

DCSigCZ- not sure I can answer your Qs effectively. But I'll try with this caveat- guns are like shoes- one that may be great in my hands may not be in yours. Too many variables. For me it's well balanced, grip angle and ergonomics is great. I've not tried the sp01. I do have a 75b in 40 S&W and prefer the P09 to it. I like the decocker design so much, I got a P01 omega that's at CGW for his magic but was impressed by the ergos. The P09 trigger was better than the P01 out off the box, but believe the P01 will shine when returned from CGW

I shoot my P09 stock, with exception, I have a fiber optic front sight. I also prefer the decocker and shoot da first shot.

I find the P09 very effective- the grip is adjustable where the sp01 is not- that may not be an issue for you. It's very easy to shoot with no modifications- for me. Am sure CZC or CGW can make it magical if needed. I've not torn it down, but find field stripping is simple.

Only minor complaint I have ( & is common w/ most CZ platforms) is the weakness of the roll pin requiring a snap cap and/ or o ring to prevent damage when dry firing.

All that said & regarding the P09 & your specific Qs
1- yes- easy to shoot accurately
2- I've only changed the front sight. Others have done work using CGW's parts kit easily from what I read online here. Best to contact them and ask
3-I've had no issues maintaining the P09.
4-as for life- my P09 looks the same as when I bought it. It's very durable from my foxhole & would be my zombie Apocolypse gun.......

Either way, think you can't go wrong.
