My VZ2008 mods
« on: August 29, 2016, 11:44:10 PM »
I'm a new member here and thought I would share my recent mods to my rifle. I have searched and haven't seen anything quite like what I have done. First I did the sear spring mod to lighten the pull. Then I added a set screw in the sear to adjust trigger over travel. It makes the trigger pull very crisp and helps some with the reset. The next thing I did was trim the trigger guard to make the mag release easier. I stiffened the spring so I wouldnt accidentally release my mag. Those are a few things I have done that might be of interest to some of you I hope. I welcome comments, suggestions, and critique. Thank you and I look forward to learning all I can about this amazing rifle.

Welcome, Bertman.  The sear mod is interesting.  How much adjustment does it have?  How does the trigger feel differently at the extreme ends of adjustment?

The sear doesnt have as much adjustment as I wanted because I needed to have the set screw end up flush in the sear. But the way it is now, when the trigger releases the striker the trigger stops immediately. It's sort of like a 1911 adjustment. Too much and the sear wont fully disengage. The only thing I didn't expect was that when the bolt comes back and hits the disconnector it allows the trigger to travel a bit further back. All in all it's still kinda cool. The better method would have been to physically stop the trigger. That will be what I try next. Both ways would help with the long reset by making the travel less.

You can also accomplish the same sear adjustment with your pistol grip screw -- I believe it was my Ronin Grip where I originally had the screw so tight that the sear wouldn't trip...  Figure out the screw threading and then you can just shorten it with a file to the point of perfection (and maybe a little past just for reliability assurance).

Unless you're a lefty, I can't subscribe to the trigger guard dremeling..  There are ambi mag releases and other aftermarket mag releases that allow for easier access to the mag release w/o cutting.  And the protected mag release was a later upgrade mod to the VZ58 after the unprotected release, presumably, caused issues in the field -- after they switched from the single loop to the split...

Sear spring you could have just bent the left one down instead of cutting, which would have effectively left a "spare" inside the rifle.  The reason you see some single leaf springs for sale is that it was a modified component required for approval as a non-automatic firearm in the many various countries where the semi-auto only version of this weapon is legal for civilians...  I do not believe it's required in the US, and if it is, it's only in the import configuration for the VZ58 sporters.

RSR: I considered the pistol grip screw adjustment but my screw stopped short before it came through the nut. Great idea though. I bent the spring originally but had to cut it for the set screw to work.  I enjoy dialog like this so that I might refine my mods and make them as good as possible. The trigger guard was just preference. Im used to AKs and reaching in to grab the release with my left hand is my natural motion.  I did stiffen the lever spring to try to prevent accidental actuation. Perhaps an extended release would have been better in retrospect. Thanks for the input and suggestions. I'm still learning this rifle.

Interesting mod on the wear and results! I love this type of experimentation.  My thoughts have always been on the trigger stop (installed back into the trigger gaurd/grip) combined with mods to the front of the trigger to limit travel - Zendl trigger and spring leveled DC is moving in the right direction, IMO.  I've tested the DC and it does extend the dwell time on the sear retention, reducing or perhaps completely eliminating early stricker release (aka Gremlin).
Great post!
