P-01 factory sights. How bad are they?
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:57:28 PM »
Already have and love the SP-01 tactical that came with TruDot night sights.

I now have green P-01 on the way and have done much research. The only complaint I'm repeatedly reading are how bad the sights are.

Are they really that bad? For those who have upgraded to night sights, does the POA/POI change much? Are you doing the work yourself, or using a gunsmith? Do you send in the slide or whole gun?

I do not have a rear sight pusher and I'm hearing the rear sight is a bear to remove.

I hope they're better than the PCR's.  I've had 4 front sights and 3 rear sights on mine in the past 6 months.  Installed what will hopefully be my last set tonight.

For my PCR ... what I ended up doing was scraping out the ate-up "glow paint" that came default and replacing it w/ a few coats of chartreuse nail polish.  I couldn't be happier.

What sights did you use, and why did you not like them?  Which is the set that is hopefully your last?

My P-06 came with Meps and they seem fine. If the P-01 comes with the same sights that my 75 c came with, I would say change them immediately.

I put Meps on the 75c, same as the P-06.
I've been wanting a green P-01.

I just used some white Testors model paint on the dots.  Works better now.  The stock glow paint is too dull to really add any contrast.

My P-01's have stock dot sights except for 1 which I changed to Mepro nights sights...only because I found a great offer on the sights.

For me, the stock sights are fine for day time shooting...I don't really focus on the dots...more the front/rear profile.

When I did change to night sights the POA/POI didn't change...just make sure you sights of the correct height!

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the Meps may be the way to go. For those who have swapped over, are you just sending in the slide or do they need the pistol to verify POA/POI?

  • Is it broken? Then why are you fixing it?

Shooting my battered factory p-01 with ages of abuse on it since '02 manufacture and police use.... I have to say the front is horrible for accurate poi, but the rear isn't too horrible for tactical use. The faded dark grey dots on the faded dark metal sight makes for an easy way to pick up the front. Now my eyes are not perfect but I don't wear prescriptions. Either way I don't normally keep any factory sights unless they're actually something great. I always get rid of them... I've got good use out of tfos, trijicons, mepros, and some custom stuff like Novaks for my 1911s and some Dawsons and heinies as well. It's all for which purpose you need and what applications are available without cutting the slide. If anyone has had good sights on their cz75, it would be the straight 8s I've handled on a couple of custom shop guns. They're real nice.
Wife: Is it broken?
Me: No.
Wife: Then why does it need to be fixed?
Me: I knew you wouldn't understand.
Me: You're way smarter than I am babe.
Wife: Ok, so if it's not broken and not fixed, what exactly is it?
Me: It's taking time Hun. Just taking some time.

They are really really hard for me to see in all but the best conditions. I'm going to try some neon model paint to see if that helps.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself (hammer and a piece of wood, or something non-scratching)...leave entire pistol with local gunsmith. As far I know, they only center the sights on the slide...no actual verification of POA/POI...that comes after when you go to the range  :)

Mine are without doubt the worst three dot sites of all my pistols... at least until I painted them white. Now they're just OK.

I ordered the Meps on Amazon and had my LGS put them on. Then I read here about variation in height.

But poi is the same so lucky me.

I didn't like the stock P-01 sights so I had a local gunsmith install a set of Dawson Precision night sights.  The cost difference between DPs and Mepros is negligible IMO.

Received my pistol today. Man what a great feeling pistola. The test target is better than my SP-01.

You guys were right though, my 50 year old eyesight was having nothing to do with the stock sights.

Didn't even shoot it.  :(  Immediately removed slide and sent to CGW for Mepros.

Could you share your experience with the model of Dawsons you chose and how well you shoot them on the p-01? Thank you. Also, a photo may help... Maybe a sight picture if you could be so kind? Haha thank you

Using Tapatalk as recommended by the welcome wagon. This DOES make photos easy to use instead of having to host them.
