Three questions for HBI:

1) I know you were shooting to have these handguards ready by the 1st or 2nd week of Nov, how's it looking?
2) On your website, you specify the the factory barrels must be shortened to use the Micro handguard, can you please explain why?
3) The instructions for your handguards recommend using the factory charging handle. Are HBI's Extended charging handles not compatible with your new handguards? I love my black Theta and have no intentions on going back to the wimpy factory CH. This might be a deal breaker for me if it's true.

Thanks

I really hope you can use the HBi charging handles. That would be pretty ridiculous of them to make a handguard that doesn't work with their charging handle.

Just ordered a pistol handguard, can't wait.

I almost did but gonna take my chances with the carbine. If I don't like it I'll swap it for a pistol.

Just ordered a pistol handguard.  I had a CZ Carbine handguard installed but when I went to unscrew my Octane, the 18x1 direct thread adapter stayed on the barrel.  I had to put a drop of blue loc-tite on my can, screw it onto the adapter, and wait for it to dry before I could get it off.  Can't get it as tight as I want so it wiggles loose by the end of a magazine.  Gonna get my barrel cut to 6.5", thread to 1/2x28 and go 3-lug.

I'd love to order the K but I need an answer on the HBi charging handle compatibility first. If HBI extended charging handles don't work with their new hanguards (as stated in the installation instructions on their site)... I'm out.

Go watch the install video, they discuss this issue there. Not that they won't work, just that two like metals rubbing against each other causes some binding.  You have to be very deliberate in how you retract the charging handle it would seem.

@biggerhammer and @sigm4 - you two are right on! This is our first "system" of components for the Scorpion (everything else that we make just drops in). So we tried to take our time and be diligent about the install guide... and 30 min install video... Took the approach of too much info being better than not enough.

So regarding the charging handles, our handguards are compatible with every charging handle on the retail market today (oem, hbi, shooters element, manticore). We checked, using multiple third party testers with each variation of aftermarket charging handle, all with nothing to gain/loose in their feedback. The reason that we mention the aluminum on aluminum friction/drag is that two of our testers noticed it, but recognized that they probably pull up/down on the charging handles as they pull back. With everyone else it was a non issue. So, we are just trying to but 100% transparent up front with the form/function because we did have it come up in testing. It is fairly common in firearms (ie:mp5, even the tavors) where the charging handle operates off center-line with the bolt, a small amount of lubrication completely resolves the issue. Or, in the case of the scorpion, simply using the polymer charge handle. Again, this is only for users that also pull dramatically down/up as they pull back.

HBI, thanks for the clarification. I've had zero issues with all of your products thus far and couldn't be happier with them. The friction coefficient of aluminum on aluminum is pretty high so your explanation makes perfect sense.

HBI - Have you tried taking the barrel shorter than 5.3"? I want to take mine down to 4.5"...

@cocowheats - you can definitely go shorter; during proof of concept testing we started with a factory pistol barrel (7.63" incl trunnion) and were cutting .375" off, testing, cutting .375" off, testing... We got down to 3.5" and the action on our test pistol was still running fine (unsupressed) with no muzzle device (just cut/crowned). We used off the shelf 115, 124, and 147gr (magtech and fiocchi). Don't want to give away too much, as it was quite a bit of work and there are already other vendors jumping on the development that we put into it. But, overall, yes, you can run a shorter barrel length than 5.3". We have done exhaustive testing with different ammo/projectiles/load energy using the 5.3". We have not done the same level of validation with the 4.5" (well, technically we have data at 4.63 and 4.25) but you should not have an issue using common factory ammo.

Based on the numbers you are asking about; you aren't by any chance considering the hk parts/griffin 3lug and a griffin low pro are you :D

Thanks for the insight; it's great appreciated! I will deff. be taking my barrel to 4.5" now! Barrel goes out this week!

I have a Griffin Optimus setup in K configuration with a tri lug assembly(I use the 18x1 HK parts tri lug adapter currently on my 7.73" barrel). So yes, I am looking to use the Scorpion with 4.5" barrel, HBi k handguard, and a K suppressor attached via a tri lug adapter on the barrel.

@cocowheats - the Griffin 3lug parts are the way to go! Your numbers are right on, here is a picture of their 3lug on our 5.3", we don't have any pictures of the same 3lug on a 4.5/4.63, but you can probably see where you will be if you go .8" shorter :-)

Man, if you guys started producing and offering a package consisting of  a 5.3" bbl already mounted in a fixation and a K handguard as a complete/everything you need drop-in micro conversion kit, people wouldn't have to worry about hacking up their factory barrel or the down time to do it. Lord have mercy!! You wouldn't be able to keep up once word got out. You have to offer the first one to me if you do it since it was my idea  ;).
