Somebody please make a mag release extension

Due to the front strap to back strap width of the 97B many have to change their grip to actuate the mag release. So since you can't move the mag release to the rear I thought a mag release extension like on the Shadow 2 or like the one Wilson Combat makes for the 1911 would definitely help reaching the release with your thumb. Maybe the Shadow 2 mag release will fit the 97B if available to purchase.

I would buy one for sure, making one wouldnt be so hard....though....it wouldnt look nearly as good as if it were machined!

I don't think it would be too hard either. Most likely require sanding the existing mag release flat then drilling/tapping for the extension paddle. Some red loctite should hold the paddle in that position. The shape of the mag release and channel on the 97B is round whereas the SP-01 is round with an oblong extension to the rear. STI sells an extesion paddle and allen screw that would work.

CGW will modify the extended mag release from a shadow and make it drop into the 97B/BD.  I have one on my 97BD chronicled here:

I read that thread but an extended mag release won't help if my thumb isn't long to have the leverage to press it effectively so a paddle extension or a grip reduction would help. The paddle would be the more cost effective solution.

I'm sure CGW can modify the WC 1911 to fit the 97B release.  Should be fairly easy to mod.  I'd call him up to get your options.

I started a reduction of the front strap and under cutting of the back strap as well as the trigger gaurd. If you plan on refinishing the firearm you may want to do these mods as well. It may help overall if you do the rear reduction. But as you said it would be cheeper to do the mag release mod. You cirtainly gave me an idea. I will try to make one for my 97, we will have to see how it comes out lol.

To do this the paddle portion needs to be attached to a CGW extended mag release. It needs to be extended to clear grips and it needs to be sanded flat so the paddle sits square to the mag release, then drill, tap, apply red loctite and attach. I would use the STI extended paddle.

The dawson one for STI looks promising it looks as if it raises up, possibly enough that the factory 97 mag release just needs a slight planing to make it flat.

I think to keep it from possibly rotating shave half of the mag release .020 one one side and shave an equal amount from the other side of the paddle. Overall your lookingat taking less than a credit card of lengthoff of overall height above the grips.

Again I will have to try this to see if it is possible with the factory mag release, otherwise I'll be buying the extended mag release to try and make it work. I'll order one tomorrow an work the mag release as well...time to get my drill press dusted off....
One question.. what tap size to use. The sti product says a 4-40... Is that too big for the factory mag release?? Ill have to mike everything once I have everything in place

I'm interested in how it turns out Dreith92.  Please let us know how you did it and what tap you used.  I have the extended release from CGW and although longer than the original, it is still too far out for my thumb to apply adequate force.

The order I put into brownells was backordered, I did recieve the bluing soloution. On friday and the two mag releases should be here in a week or so. There isnt s whole lot of material on the factory cz97b button. I may have to modify a tac sport one as noted above depending on they dimensions of the extension I ordered (sti version)

Note: the it was a shadow mag release that was noted above, but i will see if a tac sport one will work on the 97, it is already round on one side so we will see.
