My Hand Hurts
« on: September 14, 2016, 12:34:36 PM »
So I just picked up an EAA Witness in 10mm. I took it to the range and after about 50 my hand started trembling, after 100 it was hurting. I tried a tighter grip, a looser grip, nothing really helped. I was shooting SIG Performance 10mm out of it.

So as I was looking at the gun, there is the bump where the backstrap changes directions It seems to be right where the pain in my hand was. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it worth it to get/make different grips, or to change the angle? Or should I just send the gun down the road and get something else? I tried a Glock 20 Gen 3 and it was okay, maybe a Gen 4 would be better. If I send it down the road and get a CZ97, am I going to have this problem again?

What kind of pain are we talking here? Is it like surface pain and rubbing? Or is it like deeper sharp pain?

Ergonomics seem to be the issue here, but the pain seems to be happening too fast.

Which witness is it? Polymer, steel, compact, etc. Ergos definitely come into play with 10mm. If your gun is polymer, you could add a hogue handall grip wrap.
50 rnds of full power 10mm can be taxing(not sure about the sig ammo velocity). The first range trip I made with my 1911 LS 10mm was surprisingly unpleasant. I was indoors, so the report and concussion were impressive. The gun moved around in my hand enough that I stopped after 10 rounds of 180gr 1250fps ammo. I truly thought I'd made a mistake buying the gun.
Not wanting to give up, I changed from VZ Operator grips to Hogue rubber w/palm swells and an arched main spring housing. Those changes made the gun feel more like my CZ's and fit my hands better.  Next trip, recoil was no longer an issue for me. I have had friends shoot it and one of them put it down after one shot. Others said it wasn't as harsh as they expected.
All that said, I bought the 10mm because it was love at first sight and I hope to hunt pigs with it(plus it was a smoking deal). For a fun day at the range, several hundred rounds of full power 10 doesn't come to mind. I wouldn't even consider a polymer gun in that caliber.
For a fun center fire range gun, you won't find a better gun than a CZ97 period. It's softer shooting than anything I have except for my Kadet.

Welcome to the Forum ams
The Witness is a fine Pistol
It does depend on which Frame you have, on how it will treat you Hand
I have the Witness, Full sized, Large, Steel Frame
Carry it with a 10mm Compact Upper, but shoot it with a 10mm Longslide
I stretched a Hogue Wrap Around Grip onto it, and it handles and shoots very well

It may not be the caliber for you.  There's a reason why the FB of I abandoned the round.

That's a great set you have there. At some point I want to add a Witness Long Slide Hunter to my little family. Do you carry 10mm every day? Over penetration concerns me, not that my gun is even remotely suitable for urban carry. As a secondary or even primary hunting round for medium sized game I like it a lot.

If the Witness 10mm uses the same large frame as the Witness Elite Match, then you can also use the CZ factory rubber grips for the 97.

The O.P. posted on another forum that he was selling the witness. I guess his post here was a drive by.

Would it be uncouth to share the URL of said post?  I'm just curious whether or not he is offering a good deal.  I could use a hand-hurting 10mm  ;D

Thanks Earl
Yes, I carry the Semi Compact almost every day
With the size of some of the (could be) bad guys up here, they'd be considered "medium game" !   :o
I carry it with the 175g Win Silvertip HP
Here's a nice video on the Win 175 SHP:

Thanks for the info. My witness is the full size steel large frame.  I would like to keep it if there is a way to fix the grip to stop it from hurting my hand.

The pain is mostly gone, 4 days later but there is some residual weakness. It is like a deep bruise.

I posted first on 1911forum since that is where I spend most of my forum time.  I do love a cz though. I have a compact 9 that is my HD gun.

I was looking at the way the gun fits into my hand.  When I grip the frame naturally the lower portion of the backstrap is basically unsupported by my lower portion of my hand.  The backstrap is only on the meat of the thumb.  My question to you all, is there a grip or someone that can make a reasonably priced grip that will move the gun over slightly so that the whole backstrap is supported in my hand?

Thanks.  BTW I haven't completely decided on selling the gun.

A pic would be most helpful.

Here are some photos to illustrate what I am talking about:

How it sits now:

How I want it to sit
