So I just picked up an EAA Witness in 10mm. I took it to the range and after about 50 my hand started trembling, after 100 it was hurting. I tried a tighter grip, a looser grip, nothing really helped. I was shooting SIG Performance 10mm out of it.
So as I was looking at the gun, there is the bump where the backstrap changes directions It seems to be right where the pain in my hand was. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it worth it to get/make different grips, or to change the angle? Or should I just send the gun down the road and get something else? I tried a Glock 20 Gen 3 and it was okay, maybe a Gen 4 would be better. If I send it down the road and get a CZ97, am I going to have this problem again?
Which witness is it? Polymer, steel, compact, etc. Ergos definitely come into play with 10mm. If your gun is polymer, you could add a hogue handall grip wrap.
50 rnds of full power 10mm can be taxing(not sure about the sig ammo velocity). The first range trip I made with my 1911 LS 10mm was surprisingly unpleasant. I was indoors, so the report and concussion were impressive. The gun moved around in my hand enough that I stopped after 10 rounds of 180gr 1250fps ammo. I truly thought I'd made a mistake buying the gun.
Not wanting to give up, I changed from VZ Operator grips to Hogue rubber w/palm swells and an arched main spring housing. Those changes made the gun feel more like my CZ's and fit my hands better. Next trip, recoil was no longer an issue for me. I have had friends shoot it and one of them put it down after one shot. Others said it wasn't as harsh as they expected.
All that said, I bought the 10mm because it was love at first sight and I hope to hunt pigs with it(plus it was a smoking deal). For a fun day at the range, several hundred rounds of full power 10 doesn't come to mind. I wouldn't even consider a polymer gun in that caliber.
For a fun center fire range gun, you won't find a better gun than a CZ97 period. It's softer shooting than anything I have except for my Kadet.
