COLD BLUE REALLY SMELLS BAD.....
« on: September 17, 2016, 08:20:54 PM »
An acquaintance at the local match today was shooting what was probably the worst looking CZ 75BD I have ever seen. Not only did it look like ass but it smelled up the whole place. The strong smell of cold bluing gets up my nose and stays there for days. I despise the chemical smell of it. As he was shooting it the blue oxide was rubbing off on his hands and he had a cold blue mustache and we all had to chuckle. After the match he came over and asked me if there was anything that could be done, he went on to say his Wife made him leave the gun in the car so it didn't stink up his new house. She must be as sensitive to that odor as I am. Needless to say I brought another stinky stray home which now resides in a big tub of Evapo-Rust. He would not tell me who attempted to do the cold blue job so I have a feeling it was him. He lurks here so if he chimes in everyone should give him a hard time over this, I know we will.

I don't know why any one continues to buy that crap. I've yet to see any of it from any manufacturer that actually works, lasts longer than 2 cleanings and doesn't stink like a really long night of beer drinking and eating pickled eggs.

I got up about 5 this morning and checked on ol' stinky. I think I figured out why the blue job went so badly. It looks like he got the Polycoat off just fine but it seems he just polished over the gray phosphate and applied the cold blue. That is why it smelled extra loud and the bluing just wiped right off. I think a few coats of American Classic and the boiling pot after some judicious sanding will fix this jewel right up. After looking at the blue, black and red spot on the web of his shooting hand I may have to fix that irritating beaver tail for him too.
Arnie,
If you are looking I fixed that issue for you.

It's sitting outside right now in the humidity rusting away. First coat, boil and card has been done. Sure looks and smells better.

Arnie! Look! It's all one color again! Needs one more coat and I may get it in today by 10 PM if the humidity here holds out. You won't be able to rub this off Son! :) :) :)
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, your Wife will let you keep it in the house now too. Ha!

I was going to suggest just hanging one of these air fresheners from the barrel.

I use Oxpho Blue from Brownell's......it's worked really well on many past projects, I've tried several solutions but this one is the best of the bunch, not the issues some here have mentioned with products they used.  ???

Oxpho Blue is the best cold blue I know of and does not have an odor like most of the others.

Hey Arnie,
You can come and get Ol' Stinky. Or I will bring it with me on Saturday. Let me know.
