PD 124 JHP with W231/HP-38
« on: October 14, 2016, 07:17:39 AM »
Found a good load using WSF, favorite powder.  Curious about the same bullet with 231/HP-38. Loaded 4.0 to 4.5 at 0.1gr increments using 1.09 oal.  Expecting the 4.5 to be a little too hot looking at copemech's ladder and really didn't mean to load them.  Bumped my scale when I thought I was at 4.4gr (max I wanted to try).  I weigh every round when testing new loads and glanced over and saw what I had done.

? So if you're not exactly sure if you reached 4.4gr, then you need to load up some new ones and shoot those others as plinking rounds. A test is not a "test", unless you're absolutely sure what you're working with.

? My suggestion... buy a 1x4 at the lumber store and some small L-brackets. Affix the 1x4 as a narrow shelf about 14" above the clutter of your reloading bench. Put your scale on this new shelf. Your scale will be at eye level and easier to use, less affected by the vibration of the bench top happenings, and out of the way of shirt cuffs and other associated arm movements which span the bench top.

He needs to outline the tools with a black Sharpe as well. Gives it the more orderly look. O0

Obviously not a good place to have my scale when loading.  I actually adjusted my powder drop to match my scale setting which I thought was at 4.4 but was actually 4.5.  I checked my scale after I loaded 15 with test weights to make sure it was calibrated.  I say i bumped it but maybe I just mistakenly set it at 4.5 after the 4.3 loads.

Ignore that clutter on my own scale shelf and do as I say !  ;D

Lemon oil is good for rifle stocks and banjo fret boards. Neither of which I own any more.

Huh, the 4.5 gr load shot best with a 1067 fps avg, 6.3 SD, and 24 ES.  Was planning on stopping my ladder at 4.4 gr. Funny how things work out sometimes. One big hole at 15 yards(using range bag as a rest). Think I like it.  The PD 124 is an awesome bullet.

Interesting.  I am about to load same bullet with same powder at 1.08 and I was thinking of stopping at around 4.2 to 4.3gr for a Shadow.

I was going to use my SP-01 but used the P07 instead.

I have been loading the 124 gr JHP from TJ Conevera at 1.080 and 4.5 HP38/W231 and it also gave me about 1065 .

That gives me a Power Factor of 132 which has some cushion for the required 125 I need.
http://store.tjconevera.com/newtjco9mm12.html

I tested these and the Zero 125 JHP and there was a very noticeable difference in accuracy compared to the Xtreme RN and Bayou RN I usually shoot.

Probably wouldn't make a ton of difference in the gun games I participate in but I like the confidence of the extra accuracy if I need it for tight shots.

Putting your scale on a "handy" shelf is a good suggestion.   Being OC,  I also put an enclosure around mine that prevents Me from stacking stuff around it.

Being OC...

That's an abbreviated form of a common expression in 1SOW's area of Texas.
It stands for "Oh, Chit !"
