Barrel bushing problem
« on: October 14, 2016, 03:40:43 PM »
I was hitting the range today with my 97BD and about 50 rounds in the slide locked back for no quickly apparent reason, after looking more closely at the slide the only thing odd seems to be that the barrel bushing (original) was no longer indexed correctly. the bushing somehow went beyond the index mark and the recoil spring housing was jammed under one of the tabs and actually bent the tab forward and created the lockup. anyone seen this before I have about 1500 round through it and the same through my 97 B and don't understand how this might have happened. think I might need to replace the bushing.

I had the same issue in the first 150 rounds. I replaced the bushing and no further problems.

Seems like this happens from time to time. This is a good excuse to send the slide to CGW and have them install their 1911 style bushing. Problem solved.

had some work done  initially by cz custom
Is the original type bushing a drop in or does it need fitting?

^^Good question. From looking at mine i assume they are drop in but i am not 100% on this. I do not see where the fitting would take place if it was required.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

I believe they drop right in. I had a spare for mine and it fit just like the original but then I sent the slide out to CGW for the 1911 bushing which they do fit to the barrel.

We do a fair amount of the bushing conversions.  These have been bored, next step is slotting and final fitting.

Longgonedaddy,

Rear sights have to be removed to clear the lathes spindle bore.

I can't wait to send mine in for the 1911 bushing. Schmeky, is it a CGW secret as to where you source the bushings? I've heard everything from Wilson Combat to Ed Brown.

First, you somehow get a Gator to eat a chunk of steel, i am unclear how this is achieved. Once fully digested and the Gator passes the peace of steel it sits at the bottem of a swamp for 16 days. Then schmeky dawns his scuba gear and gator repelling stick and dives to the bottem of the swamp to recover the peace of steel. All swamp muck is removed and it is carefully shaped to fit your CZ97.

This exact thing happened to me on my new 97BD.  I called CZ USA and they sent me a replacement bushing in the mail free of charge.  I'd give them a call and see what they can do for you.  I don't see how this can happen when shooting unless the bushing was installed and not indexed correctly.  I have a feeling that I didn't index my bushing correctly upon installation leading to my issue.

Cheers,
Toby

Actually we use Evolution Gun Works (EGW) for our bushings.  We know the owner, George Smith pretty well, he's a great person.  EGW makes other parts for us as well.  We designed the bushing to work with the 97's lower recoil spring plug.  The rest of the bushing is pure 1911.

The stock bushing can rotate if the steel recoil spring plug compresses the recoil spring when the slide is fully reward, which can allow the plug to back out of the retaining slot = out of place bushing.

Poor gater, Smecky!
New to my beloved 97B so sorry for the dumb question but what are the advantages of the 1911 bush vs. the CZ indexable bush?
Thanks for your insights!!!

I'm in the same boat, really lose bushing, called CZ USA...they'll send a new one but will be like a 2 week delay because of some computer problem on their side. Wondering if i should pull the trigger for an E conversion...
