Plausible deniability -- the Soviets sent VZ58s and scorpions to a lot of places where they wanted a third degree of separation. B/c of this, there became considerable inventories sent to various left wing paramilitaries, etc, throughout western Europe and anywhere there was a proxy war (or preparations for future war) between the West/NATO and Soviet/Communist/Socialist interests throughout the 1970s and 1980...
VZ58s were found during our Vietnam war in Vietnam, throughout Central/South America (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Chile, Nicaragua, Grenada, etc), sub-Saharan Africa (Tanzania, Angola, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, etc), Mediterranean (Libya and Cyprus), and Far East (including aforementioned Vietnam, India, and Indonesia), etc.
So VZ58s are relatively common for no definitive source firearms... Depending on open insurgency (VZ58) vs more covert ops (Scorpion), both are found with a fair bit of frequency.
Interestingly with the VZ58, it's found nearly as often as the AR18 in the Troubles in Northern Ireland, but opposite sides (AR18 IRA, VZ58 loyalist forces). Recall seeing this a couple years back -- the VZ58 being provided from South Africa/Armscorp to British Government and to Loyalist forces in Northern Ireland. A couple links to the story:
