Compact recoil springs
« on: November 02, 2016, 12:03:17 PM »
Curious if folks are reducing the poundage from factory standard and replacing their recoil springs.

If so why and what brand and poundage did you select? What is considered reliable for most factory rounds?

I'm seeing different options for other springs (hammer, trigger, FP, FP block etc.), but not much on recoil springs.

For the compacts a typical reduced power recoil spring is 14# which makes it easier to work the slide.  Both CZ custom and CGW offer guide rods/springs. Personally I leave the stock weight flat wire recoil springs.

I just recently ordered 14 pounders (and the other springs) to try out and/or spares for the tool box -- see if my PCR ejected cases more than "dribble" out.  If your cases are ejecting properly, then you likely have an adequate recoil spring.

I guess what I'm looking for is any advantage a reduced power spring may offer.

For example, in my SP-01 during rapid firing I found that I'm able to keep more rounds on target with a 12 lb spring and still maintain excellent ejection 6-8 ft. I believe that the Shadows come with a stock 11 lb spring. Not sure what CZ places in their custom compact pistols.

It may be better to order several springs and see if there is any advantage without sacrificing reliability with factory rounds. Hoping others can chime in with their experience.

I've stuck with 14 lbs as a good all around weight for my classic 75 Compact. Depending on the load the ejection distance changes a little but I've never had an issue... Haven't had a need to test any lighter. Sorry I don't have more experience with other weights.

Thanks. I'm aware that the guide rod would have to be changed. Any issues with battering the aluminum frame with a SS one? It seems to be the only option.

My classic 75 Compact has a steel frame so I haven't had to worry... That's a good point, I'm going to give CGW a call and see if I need to swap guide rods. I think I remember them saying I wouldn't have to, but now I'm not sure.

How about an aluminum guide rod for an aluminum framed pistol? It appears that at one time CZ made these.

This would seem a logical choice for someone wanting to use the round vs flat recoil spring in a P-01/PCR.

Okay, just got off the phone with CZ and here is what they said:

They do not recommend a SS guide rod in an aluminum frame.

You can use a reduce poundage round wire spring with the existing plastic guide rod.

Anyone disagree with this?

Thanks for calling and checking! I hadn't had time while I was working on a little project for another thread. This sounds like the unspoken consensus I found when searching the forum and interwebs. I did see that in the past CZ Custom offered the aluminum guide rod, but I didn't see if they still do. It sounds like the plastic ones will actually last a very very long time and provide some shock absorption. I am going to keep my plastic guide rod in my new SP-01 Compact and just throw a 14lb recoil spring in there. Should handle my fart loads and my higher power loads, and if it doesn't I have to stock one and a 10 lb recoil spring sitting in my spare parts stash. That's just me...

You are welcome sir. FWIW I also asked about the P-01 SDP coming with a SS guide rod.

He stated that that he believed that modifications are made on that model to allow for the metal guide rod but did not elaborate further.

CZ has the aluminum guide rod in stock, Part Number 465700000503 for $18.00. It has some sort of a black coating on it that I think is meant to reduce friction.  I have this guide rod in my PCR and P-01.

Not seeing it. Can you provide a link? Interesting that CZ did not mention it.
