CCI Primers and CGW UlraLite Kit
« on: November 07, 2016, 07:50:00 PM »
Hi All-

I wanted to ask to anyone who has installed a CGW Ultra-Lite kit in their Shadows has encountered any issues using CCI primers with the 11.5lb HS.

So far I have used Win SPP and I have had no issues. I was going to purchase more primers and all I can find is CCI primers. I know David at CGW tells me the preferred are Federal but can't never find those.

Thanks.

As long as you seat the primers deep and hard for maximum sensitivity they will all go pop. I have used several thousand with my Shadow running the extended firing pin and the 11.5 main spring and have not had a single light strike. If you don't seat them hard you may have a problem but so far I have not with CCI or the S&B primers which are close to the same as the CCI's.

Thanks SPO1SHADOW.

Primers MUST always be seated till they bottom out in the pocket otherwise ANY primer can fail to ignite no matter what weight spring you are running.

Well my other press is a Hornady LNL progressive and no way in hell can I seat until they bottom out.

So seat until the primer starts to flatten?

I can go close to 10 thousandths with some primers... seems deep.

Oteroman,  the primers don't have to be crushed.  They have to have the three anvils grounded in the bottom of the primer hole.  When they aren't grounded,  they are likely to not fire on the first strike.  That strike may drive it in enough to ground the anvils so it will fire on the second strike.
With a progressive press it's harder to know by "feel" that the anvils are fully seated.  Maybe just run ONE case through the press cycle and be sure the primer is seated firmly in the bottom of the primer hole.  Measure the depth below the base of the case.  A couple of checks for that or more depth when normally reloading will give you a spot check.  Fred uses this s method.

Definitely a feel thing. Do as suggested and do a couple just seating a primer without any other functions going on.  If you get some that don't fire pull the trigger again. If it fires you are the problem. Likely won't be one.
