Should I modify my new P-01? UPDATED

After putting a few hundred rounds through my new P-01 I decided to send the P-01 to Cajun Gun Works this afternoon. For those of you who are not familiar with the process, you do not specify the work you want performed when you send the gun to CGW. It is only when the pistol is assigned to a gunsmith that you are contacted to discuss the work you want performed.

I have decided to have the barrel bushing ($60) and FO front and blacked out rear sights ($87) installed for sure. After shooting the P-01 I am pretty certain I want the Reach Reduction Kit (RRK) installed too so now I am looking at the "Pro-Package In Shop 75" ($386). This is the same configuration I have on my SP-01 and 75 D PCR. Those who stressed the importance of consistent feel among my guns struck a responsive chord.

It is worth noting that if I did not live in California, I could have saved myself a lot of hassle and a little bit of money by purchasing a P-01 with the Pro Package installed directly from Cajun Gun Works for $946. (https://cajungunworks.com/product/91199-p-01-9mm-pro-package-946-00/).

My SP-01, BD, and D PCR have the CGW Pro Package and barrel bushing and I love they way they shoot. I intend to designate my new P-01 as my HD gun therfore does it make sense to add a light and;

A) do not modify the P-01 at all.

B) send to Cajun Gun Works and have the Defensive Carry package and barrel bushing installed.

I do not have reservations about the reliability of the CGW mods. My concerns rest solely with my ability to safely handle the firearm in a high stress situation.

I have a stock Glock 19 but I do not feel as comfortable with my accuracy using the G19 as I do with my CZs.

I would wait and put several hundred rounds through your new P-01. Hopefully at an outdoor range where you can draw from the holster and practice shooting and moving and general gun handling.
Then after you are really comfortable with the gun and your ability, decide on the CGW package.
I did my own mods to my P-02 and basically got a lighter trigger, shorter reset and better sights. Nothing negative and only positive for me but everyone is different.

For me, I modify only based on how I shoot the gun and feel about it. I have completely stock Glocks and modified Glocks. I have a modified P-01 and an untouched SP-01 Compact. This is all about how each individual gun shoots and behaves for me. I train how I fight (ingrained habit) so my concealed carry guns get drawn from concealment at the range, drawn while sitting, etc. My home defense gun gets shot in the configuration it's intended for (light attached etc.), and practiced from picking up from a box or on the bench simulating a night stand. After I do all those things for a few hundred rounds or so, I'll determine if I need to change anything. Just food for thought before modding.

I agree, run a  few hundred rounds through it first.
 Myself I will not highly tune a self defense pistol as to  trigger/hammer as I want it to be reliable under the worst conditions and a hard primer isn't normal but it does happen.
 what I did to my P-01 was add trit sights for night use and lightly  reduced spring rates.
it is happily running at north of 7 K rounds without a single malfunction and groups at  about 3 inches out to 10 yards.
 to each their own however.

The mods are all upgrades that will make the gun more accurate, functional, easy to use, and reliable.  The only thing you wouldn't want is a trigger that is too light.  You can just tell Cajun that you don't want your single action to be below a certain weight, such as, say, 4 lbs.    The great thing about a CZ is that you can have the mods done to get a proper, clean, reliable, consistent trigger, function and ignition.  And then if you ever think the trigger is a little too light, you can always just put a slightly heavier mainspring in it, in about 20 seconds flat, which will beef up both the double action and single action trigger.   

I tune all my pistols, especially if they are going to be relied upon for carry and/or home defense.  I just tune them for the intended application.

I did the pro-package in mine but have a heavier hammerspring for that first DA pull so you know you have to pull.  The trigger is much smoother and then SA is a dream.  Also, you get benefit of smaller reach.

David can do the same for you.  I'm running a 17# spring.  He needs to modify his extended firing pin to get this to work.  Added benefit is that this works for Kadet 100% also.

I say do this as all your guns will feel the exact same except for that critical first DA pull on your home defense gun.

This is my concern.

Right now I am leaning towards my initial plan and send it to CGW in December (that is the current estimated date to send in my P-01) and describe in great detail what I want. Polish the internals, add the Defensive Carry package and the 10x barrel bushing.

As I have said elsewhere, on a HD gun I do not plan on using night sights. I would not consider pulling out the P-01 without having a bright light on it assuring me the sound I hear is not my granddaughter getting up to use the bathroom. Probably a FO front and a black tactical rear.

I say, shoot it first.  It'll give you a better idea of what you consider essential and what can wait.  I usually don't decide what I want to do until I've put at least 500 rounds thru it.  As a result, better sights are my first priority.

These responses help me clarify what I want. I will start with the Streamlight TLR-4 Tac Light with red laser and keep the stock sights.

In Dec/Jan, when CGW is ready to work on my gun, I will decide on FO front/Tac rear like on my SP and DPCR or TFX Pro like I have on my BD.

Won't get to shoot it much before it flies to Louisiana, can't DROS until beginning of Dec.

With enthusiast forums such as this one, I think the answer regarding modifications is always "yes".

But honestly, from a practical, pragmatic viewpoint, I think if the rest of your weapons are  CGW modified, it makes more sense having the same characteristics.  It seems to me, that would only serve to increase your familiarity.  But, that's only my opinion.

That is my thought too, but if you are worried about light trigger, get that heavier hammer spring.  Make all your guns feel the same.

I have to mirror what others have said and put a few hundred rounds through your gun before you change anything. If nothing less you will be able to appreciate the difference any modifications you make get you.

With that said I've seen a lot of people talk about not modifying a concealed carry or home defense weapon at all, I believe the sentiment is it came from the factory able to shoot hundreds or thousands of rounds without parts breakage in that particular configuration. Few, if any aftermarket companies can afford financially or dedicate the time to putting thousands of rounds through a gun just for testing purposes. If your drawing a CC or HD gun then your life is on the line and you want to know 100% that the gun will fire.

However in the case of some parts like hammers made from superior metals or springs made from better steel I don't see where you could go wrong. If you replace a hammer made from cheaper steel or MIM with something made out of forged steel cut on a CNC machine how can you loose?  A lot of factory CZ sights are, let's just call it hard on the eyes for making quick target acquisitions, if you can swap them for aftermarket pieces that allow you a quicker shot, again how can you go wrong. 

I say replace parts as you see fit, I think David at CGW would be a smart man to talk to being you want the upmost reliability due to the intended purpose of the gun.

Keep it stock unless you have problems.  You already have your 25 yard target guns.  How big is your bedroom?

I say modify to your heart's content. I'm spoiled by a nice trigger you get by putting in a hammer and short reset. Why would I punish myself with a factory trigger for a few thousand rounds? Not to mention the muscle memory you build into shooting an overly harsh trigger. One of the reasons I like CZ's is the ease of modification. To me they are the ARs of pistols.
