Pearce Grip Extension flying off mag when shooting
« on: November 12, 2016, 02:39:33 PM »
Hi guys,

Have any of you had issues with the Pearce Grip extension not being secure?  I've had two occasions of it flying off while shooting.  That's twice in 350 rounds.

The Pearce part I'm using is PG-XDM which I think is correct.  The flange on the bottom of the mag does not extend out far enough to be secure in the Pearce channels.  If I push down on the side of the Pearce grip with a little force the Pearce grip pops off.

Since this is a range gun I don't mind putting some epoxy on it.  But...there must be a better solution.

Thanks,
Dave

When I had mine installed I never had any issues.

Here's a little more info.  I compared the Pearce to the factory grip.  The inside diameter of the Pearce is about 2 millimeters wider than the factory grip plate.  The wider bottom on the Pierce is too loose of a fit.

I wonder what is different with my set up?

Thanks,
Dave

Yeah, those modified Pierce grips did not work for me -- had a tendency to pop off and dump all the rounds on the ground. Not good for any purpose.

For my short 10-rd mag, I used an extended aluminum base pad, which works MUCH better. As memory serves, it was this one from CZ Custom or something similar:

$17.00 for a rock solid aluminum piece specifically made for CZ magazines vs. a plastic piece for another brand that you have to modify to make fit and hope it stays together when the SHTF...sounds like a no-brainer to me.

We have installed the Pearce grip extensions on the 10 round RAMI mags w/o issue, but the extensions have to be modified.

The correct Pierce grip extension is the PG-XD.  Not the XDM.  I just successfully modified a PG-XD+ over the weekend and so far so good

After a range test today, the 1st round was a little squirrelly getting it to feed about half of the time and I had 3 FTF on the next 6 magazines.  I think that since the follower is not under as much tension at the end, that may be the issue.  Before this mod, I had never experienced a failure of any type.

If you're limited to 10-round magazines in your state and want that much grip extension, then you might as well buy a factory CZ75 10-round magazine and fit it with the Rami factory magazine filler sleeve. That way, you've got perfect fit, ergonomics and reliability.

Does this base pad have the same amount of extension as the modified Pearce extension?

Yes.

And there are even longer aluminum competition base plates available at CZ Custom if you want them.

They offer different lengths: long, medium, short.

Live in Georgia so not restricted to 10 rounds but you are correct, why not just use the 14 round mag with the sleeve.  For me, I want a little extra length for my pinky but do not want to add the additional length to the back.  The PG-XD+ attached to the 10 round mag is 1/16" shorter than the 14 round mag in the front but is a whole 1/2" shorter in the back.  You do have a point though, when SHTF it better work.

I bought one of these and it fits and functions great:

Not sure which extension is the right one but this one comes ready to use and makes the short mag feel great in the hand.

Cheers,
Toby

The correct Pierce grip extension is the PG-XD.  Not the XDM.

Wow, thanks.  That's the issue.  I was not aware of the Springfield models and that the xdm mag is wider than the xd.

That explains it.

Thanks guys,
Dave

Well, you should shoot it extensively with that mod to prove reliability before you carry with it. As you see above, function with any of the existing Pearce base pads has been spotty. Personally, I wouldn't stake my life on anything that's not drop dead reliable.

Are you sure that these fit a RAMI magazine? Looking at the pictures I am not so sure.

Oh yeah, you're right, that particular one apparently is made for slave states, to limit normal CZ75 mags to 10 rounds only. They make so many different types of aluminum base plates with extra meat on them that it gets confusing.

However, CZ Custom makes several extended machined aluminum base pads (some of which offer a few rounds of extended capacity) that should work for the Rami and other CZ75s -- but I would call CZ Custom to make sure:

http://czcustom.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=aluminum+base+pad

I used this 'flush fitting" one on my stock 10 rd mag so I'd have a legal 10 rd mag when I go to CA. This one is long enough for my pinky to get purchase on the base pad for comfort and it definitely works:
