CGW Hammer Spring
« on: November 26, 2016, 01:01:02 PM »
I'd like to buy the 18# hammer spring, it says the associated firing pin spring is necessary, is this true?

I watched this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VhXSYKxcaA

Disassembly appears to be super easy. I don't have any punches for the roll pin in the slide. Does anyone have the correct size? More so just worried of putting it back together and bending the firing pin. Also, from experience, can the factory roll pin like others be re-used? I see CGW sells replacements.

Also does anyone know the correct size punch for the magazine housing roll pin, for the hammer spring? I've changed back straps, but if I'm considering taking the slide part, I may as well buy the correct punches and a plastic or rubber mallet.

The CGW 18# P series hammer spring requires 97041 firing pin spring, not a firing pin.

The Main Spring Plug Pin should push right out once you push in the Main Spring Plug and take the springs weight off of it. A correctly sized punch is not required as long as it is smaller than the pin. If i remember correctly i used a 1/16th last time i took mine apart. A 1/16 is allot smaller than the pin for reference.

I believe the punch required for the firing Pin Retaining Pin is a 3/32. I need to confirm this not 100%. Yup 3mm or 3/32 for sure.

Thank for the info. I had the back strap off already, but I'd like to use the proper tool next time. Same thing for the slide roll pin.

I meant to say firing pin spring. I know they also make a kit with the FP spring, FP block plunger spring, and the hammer spring.

So I need to order that I presume.

I recommend a good 1/8in roll pin punch from Brownells. And get the new split FP retaining pin from CGW as well. It will stand up to repeated dry firing as the factory roll pin will not.

Well with all those suggestions, looks like I am set. I will get the punch, the CGW spring kit, CGW roll pin, and I should be ready.

I only wish a bleep bench block was cheaper than $20, cost's as much as the bleep spring kit. Trying to do this with the proper tools so I may spring for one.

Before I bought a bench block, I used a roll of cheap 2" masking tape. Works great for driving pins into and the sides are sticky/grippy.

Im with you .. I do a fair amount of tinkering and a roll of tape works great ... and I get to use the tape!   ;D

Speaking of tape .. take a little piece off the roll and put it on the slide over the area where the roll pin is to be removed. Punches have a way of finding their way to your finish and leaving nasty bright spots.

Even better with the tape idea, and yes, not a bad idea to put some on the slide just in case of any slip ups.

Self Defense spring kit on order as well as the roll pin. Can't wait. Hopefully they arrive before the weekend so I can install and hit the range this Sunday.

FYI ... I ran a 17# hammer spring without changing the firing pin spring and I had 100% ignition with a fair variety of ammo including my spear gold dots. Having said that... When I placed my last order I got the reduced power firing spring JUST as an extra bit of insurance since its my carry gun. Its a super easy swap and for about 5 bucks, well worth it.

Well that is good to know. I wanted to go that route, but this is my nightstand gun as it the Urban Grey comes with the + 2 base pads, so I always need it to go bang.

I've been having too much fun at the range so I got the defense spring kit to compromise. I'm hoping the FPB plunger springs and main spring make things even better, as in SA, my trigger broke in quite nicely. Kit comes with the FP springs so we are all good.

If you haven't done it already and you are going to have the slide guts apart anyway look at the tune up thread and absolutely spend 5 minutes polishing up the firing pin block. That little round sucker when I pushed it up and down manually was a gritty nasty drag. A few minutes and it moved up and down freely. No sense throwing in new springs if you dont remove the obvious rough spots.

Just found it, looks like a good read. I don't have access to air tools like I use too, but I'm sure I have some sand paper to knock any burs off the plunger if I can see any... for now that is.

The thread says just says to polish it with 2000 grit by hand, which is cake. So  I will be doing that.

Welp, parts wont be here until tomorrow, but I followed Joe's instructions and disassembly was very easy. I figured I'd have it ready for when the goods show up.

Have you installed the springs?  I am also thinking of getting the same springs.  For anybody out there who has done this, did you notice any improvement?
