I was curious if this was possible as well. After looking at the parts diagrams for both the P-07 and P-09 it appeared that a grip chop would be possible. I used my P-07 for measurements and a dremel to make the cuts on my P-09 grip. A new hole needed to be drilled for the main spring plug pin. The main spring plug on the P-09 needed to be shortened to match the P-07's. The P-07 back straps and magazines fit and the pistol functions flawlessly.

The grips on the P-09 were just too large. Now they are perfect.

 Dang, good work man. I used to do that to Glock 17's and chop 19's to 26 length for customers. For certain roles they worked great.

I sent my P09 off for the RMR milling, installation, cerakoting first (didn't want to chance my EDC P07).  The P09 worked so well I then shipped my P07 off for the same work.  While the P07 was gone I carried the P09.  The grip/magazine sticking out was about impossible for me to hide, comfortably. 

The barrel/slide sticking straight down was no issue, but the magazine/grip frame sticking out (front = AMIII, back = IWB) was bad.

Looks like you've got yours ready to go.

If this was for me, I have RMRs on the P07 and P09.  Yes, still going strong.  I did put a DP Pro on my wife's CZ 75 Compact and it still works, too.

I've been waiting and watching to see when someone would try to chop a P09.  This is EXACTLY what I wanted to do to my P09 before I sold it.  I was afraid to try it myself but I did a lot of looking and measuring.  CGW didn't want to touch it; CZ Custom estimated $150-$200 to do the job, and would have provided a P07 mainspring plug and backstraps for that price.

I wound up selling the P09 'cause I didn't want to spend that much and I didn't think I'd be happy in the long run but those pics make me want to buy another and take my chances with a Dremel.  Man that's cool.

Question for P. Garber Fm: did you save the chopped-off part?  I thought it would make a good spacer for the full-length P09 mags but I don't know if it would survive the operation.

The cut had to be angled at the rear for the backstrap and main spring parts (unlike the flat bottomed P-09) so that it would match the P-07 grip. In creating that angle, the chopped-off portions were essentially destroyed.

I was really timid about doing this as well, but some of the information from this board gave me the confidence to try. In particular, M1A4ME's comments from earlier in this thread. I compared the main springs (P-07 and P-09) and main spring struts and they appeared to be the same. The main spring plugs were different lengths, but I was able to chop the P-09 to P-07 size (again with the dremel). The only part I had to order was a P-07 small backstrap.

All in all the mod was very easy and might have taken 2 hours on a Saturday, start to finish (including sanding the cuts smooth). This was the first time I ever used a dremel and I am not a hands-on, handyman type of person, so if I can do it, I'm sure anyone could. Honestly, I was shocked by how simple this was.

When I shortened the grip frame on my Pre B CZ 85 (to use the 16 round magazines with the +2 bases on them - so I wouldn't have to keep the P01/CZ 75 high cap magazines separate from the CZ 85 extended magazines) I used a small "hobby" belt sander from Harbor Freight.

It might be easier to keep things "straight" on the reduction and keep the angles correct vs. the dremel.  I use a dremel for stuff but with the dremel it's harder to cut/sand things straight vs. that 1" belt with the nice little table in front of it to use when holding the work piece against the belt.

I'll probably use the belt sander when I make the CZ 85 Compact "clone" trigger guard look like a Pre B CZ 85 trigger guard (last thing to do before getting it refinished.)

But the more I think about it, it makes some sense.  Maybe NOT for your only P gun, but it does do a few things:

- the grip size of the p07 is about perfect for many folks.  It just sticks better in the hand than the p09.  The p09 is just a bit long for most people to feel “locked in”.

- the p09 shoots softer and this stays because of the slide and recoil system.

- it will be easier to conceal at least in terms of the butt.

I think the key is fitting the p07 back strap on then cutting to fit that.  Yes access to a belt sander would make this easier.

+1 Brian,  I totally agree with your thoughts on this. Conceptually the best of both a P-07 and P-09. Very cool looking too.
However, for those of us who love the feel, balance, and compactness of a P-07; a reasonable compromise without 'chopping' anything might be the SR P-07 with the longer barrel, slightly higher muzzle velocity, and a Red Dot for speed and accuracy.  I love this Pistol! -Vinny

That easily fits within the USPSA 141mm limit gauge for CO competition
