Product Review: Dillon Tool Heads - JoferUSA
« on: January 09, 2017, 02:13:11 PM »
Saw something intriguing on Ebay: Multi-colored CNC machined tool heads for Dillon 550 and 650 reloading machines. Then I noticed the price was also much better than Dillon !

In swapping out a Dillon 550B for an XL650, one of the main costs was going to be replacing the 8 tool heads. Dillon is asking $33 for each tool head on the 650, so besides the price of the press it was going to be an additional $230 just to hold my dies ! That was a serious impediment to the upgrade plan.

As with all things Ebay, expectations were for some cheap junk from China that broke the first time it was used. You can image how delighted I was when the package arrived and the tool heads were even higher quality than Dillon !!! And, they are available in different colors, which will help identify the units.

These tool heads are USA made, CNC machined to very high tolerances, and then anodized to different colors. The quality is high enough to be aircraft grade. My 3 samples have been bouncing around my bench for a week, in and out of the new press, and show no signs of wear. The fit is excellent !

If you go onto Ebay, you'll want to bookmark the Jofer Ebay store and watch the prices. The list price for the 650 tool head is a competitive $24 to $29, but on Christmas I saw these same items for $12 each. Later on New Years day they were $18. So the price varies day to day and you can really save if you're willing to wait.

Check them out on the web... http://www.joferusa.com/?page_id=3610
Check out their Ebay store... http://stores.ebay.com/joferusa-outlet?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

And on top of the good prices... the shipping for one unit was $4. They shipped all 3 of these for the same low price. They used USPS Flat Rate boxes, so delivery was on-time and right to the mail box.

Color me pleased !   ;)

On their web page and sometimes on Ebay they offer a pair for less than 2 singles. Which ever way you got some, you're really going to like them.

Do they fit tighter in the press than the Dillon tool heads?  My Dillon RL550 tool heads have a very loose fit.  I temporarily shimmed them with aluminum HVAC tape.

Yes, they seemed to have thickened the flange a slight amount. These don't rattle in the press.

Yep, the price list above is still accurate.  If all prices were equal, I would have gone with different colors, but I'm not inclined to pay a 50% increase on price for color preference... though that purple is awfully purty.  ;)

Again, as a reference.....

$29.95 off the Dillon Precision site (a bit less for 2) for raw aluminum. $34.95 for the purty anodized colors, though they only offer 4 colors.

JoferUSA quality at least as good as the OEM.

Seems like paying "extra" for purty colors is still less expensive (not cheaper mind you) than a raw OEM part.

For me,,,, I would just continue on with raw aluminum since I am bound to forget which color represents which caliber.  Label Maker ftw.

Paper labels are supplied with the tool head. Still, I intend to go buy a label maker and do it more neatly.

You're right. I really like the other colors, including purple !

Hopefully the decision making will be less taxing than pulling the trigger on a 650XL.....

I ordered them at 5:00PM on Monday.  Got them about 3:00PM today.  I'll give them a pat on the back for less than 48 hours turnaround time.  ;)
