Your Opinion Wanted About Video Tutorials
« on: January 15, 2017, 12:57:37 AM »
I am recording total disassembly, upgrades, polishing, and reassembly. Wanted to get opinions. Do you all think it is more helpful to have 1 long video covering all disassembly or have it broken into short segments that go into a playlist? The short clips would be specific to each part so people could reference just what they need. What do you all think/want?

Playlist with individual sections would be ideal.

The alternative is just timestamp your long video so people can click the timestamps to skip to the parts.

Not being into YouTube too much I didn't think about time stamping like that. Have you found those as easy to use?

Post it both ways with links between the videos. Best of both worlds.

This is my biggest issue with gunsmith videos, particularly YT.  Editing. Let me explain. Typically the activity is a single camera shot which is fine. I don't really need to see your face just the work and hands in action. Also, commentary to the camera (focusing, etc) issues is unnecessary. Edit in a close-up shot later. If a part gets awkward, then edit in the same activity shot better. the audio can overlap and there is no requirement to talk constantly. if a spring is not going quite right, we see that and it is important to know it is 'tricky'. we are watching and learning.

I realize what I am asking is a lot. Even the 'professional' gunsmith videos fall short. But in the end I consider the effort to be a big payoff in quality, information, and usability.
It all sounded a lot funnier in my head.

Segments sound the best. Especially for the technology challenged like me.

Broken down into specific activities.

    Detail strip

    Disassembly of components

    Polishing/replacement

    Re-assembly

    Additionally:

Removal/replacement of common items such as sear cages, hammers, hammer springs, mag brakes, trigger bars, disconnectors, sights, bushings.

That makes sense. All I have is a Gopro and their editing software, but I think it will get the job done. In editing I'll try to pay attention to those things and clean up as best I can.

I tried not to record really long clips. I had the initial idea that it would be easier for review and editing if I segmented at each step in recording. This is just about perfectly inline with Grendel's idea right now and I just have to do editing and clean up. (at least for disassembly, as that's what I finished yesterday).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Keep ideas and recommendations coming and I'll do my best to integrate them.

Maybe do a video on the specific parts and what their actual function is and why ,and how certain modifications are done a certain way,  have an effect on the function of the gun.
IE ,, ( why polishing "too much" can have a negative effect on the function and timing  of the pistol .)
Don't ask me how I know that :-) .
Are you going to coordinate with schmecky ?
