Cleaned about 2k brass last night. Mix of my brass and nice indoor range pick up from when I was at an indoor range. Almost all of my brass is Federal or Winchester (weeded out the rest since the ranges provided so much quantity of these 2 better brands - over stuff like S&B, CBC, PMC, etc.). Anyways, I noticed something strange on one of the brass and it looked stepped. Found 3 FC brass that looked stepped. It sounds like this is NOT something FC does though. Would this be a strange chamber thing possibly or could these really be stepped from FC?

Federal and Blazer brass in .380 acp have a small step inside the case to prevent bullet setback.  I've not seen it in their brand of 9x19 brass, though.

Hope this helps.

Here's what I have found. Maybe it's not what you guys were talking about and you only were talking about internal stepping... Pictures are just with and without flash. I can't see any internal stepping.

The 'step' is inside the case, not a bulge outside.

No,  that looks like a sizing-crimping issue.  The knurled band is what Fred commented about.  The stepped cases have a dramatically thicker internal "Ledge" at a defined point down from the case mouth.  The MAXX cases were ledged at depth that wouldn't allow most of my 9mm 124 gr bullet loads along with IDs and others here with moderately deep-set bullets..

Let me know if you can click and see this case.  This .... Google photos has restricted viewing the links I post.  My problem to find the fix.

The reflection is making it look different. It's actually not a bulge but almost like it is necked down by a thousandth. Here's the picture with a little line trying to outline what is happening. Anyways, it isn't stepped but is this a crimping die? Should I toss them or will normal dies fix this?

I'm not sure what's going on there, but the step we're referring to is pictured here.

What do those look like inside?

It definitely doesn't have that internal step. I can't get lighting inside to get a worth while picture... But the change in Diameter is just noticeable, but not as visually pronounced since the inside of the brass isn't as shiny.

The cases known for separating have the internal step. The change in internal dimension is typical of all 9mm cases and is the reason that seating deeper than .300 is problematic.

Why don't you run those cases you have through the sizing die, if you haven't already , and see how they look.

Scarlet Pistol,

What you have there is brass that was fired in a Browning High Power pistol.  They have a two part chamber.  The two halves don't always match up perfectly, and you'll get the outside "two step" brass.  It's normal for that type of chamber and the brass will size and reload just fine.

You don't see it much simply because the High Power isn't that common anymore.  I can't remember the last time I saw one at our club, but they're out there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Fred for the insight! Comforting to know what it was and I can use it.
