This kind of stuff always "bothers" me and since we haven't been sticking to reloading here are some often repeated internet facts that just bug the snot out of me.
1. Never put oil on the gas piston of an M1A, it'll cause malfunctions. Keep the piston and cylinder dry.
I've wiped my M1A gas piston off every time I clean it for 39 years now. Never an issue.
2, Never put oil on a striker fired pistol striker or striker sleeve, it'll cause malfunctions.
No one told my Glock, XDM or M&Ps that this was a bad thing. They are oiled up right now (in the gun cabinet).
3. Never oil firing pins/firing pin channels, it'll cause malfunctions.
I'm not going to tell you how many AR15's, M1 Garands, CZ pistols, 1911's, etc., etc. I have always oiled the firing pins and firing pin channels on. No issues.
4. The extra 200 fps muzzle velocity a .357 SIG gives you over a 9MM doesn't make it enough more effective than a 9Mm to be worth it.
At some point some of those same posters will recommend you use 9MM +P ammo to get an extra 150 fps over the standard 9MM self defense ammo to make it more effective.
5. 1911's are not reliable.
Okay, I had one (modified before I got it) Colt 1911 that was feed sensitive to short length rounds. I have two that have malfunctioned twice and one that has never malfunctioned/failed to feed. The Combat Commander will feed/chamber/eject empty .45 acp cases from the magazine one after another. I took my old Colt 1911 (made in 1917) to the range with the boys a year ago and (using GI magazines) loaded 230 grain LRN, 200 grain RN with flat point, and 185 grain LSWC and it fed/fired/ejected every round we ran through it.
6. Plated bullets are no good for self defense. Depending on who is posting you may read that the lead is too hard to expand. Someone else may say the lead is too soft to be pushed to velocities where it will expand.
Hey, is the lead too soft, or too hard? Aren't Gold Dots plated ammo?
I've got more but my wife is finally ready to go grocery shopping.
