The VV N320 locally is about the same, $36.95 for me after taxes. Which resulted in me ordering a 4# jug from PV (among other stuff) earlier this week.

That Vit is only marked up about $5.  I can't see the price on the primers.

When I asked if they had a 4# jug,  my local practice range recently sold me four 1# jugs of n320 for the same price as a 4# jug.  Out the door was $119.xx  I was surprised and happy.  ;D 8)

I'm sure the Vit is good stuff, but I just gotta say that I find nothing at all wrong with the moderate 130PF loads I have been loading using the HP-38. It works, nothing special, does its job, does not seem dirty to me at all.

This is a genuine question. What makes Vit so desirable? Is it the fact that it is a single base powder? Cleaner burn (all other variables held conatant)? Why not use a powder with a comparable burn rate?

It's mainly because N320 has the perfect burn rate for Minor PF 9mm, and several others. Being single base means your barrel doesn't get burned out and your gun isn't all trashed up.

Then there are the slightly slower big brothers, N330 and N340. Due to their naming convention, if you happen across a can of N310 or N350 you know exactly where they fall in the line up.

Who doesn't love Unicorn farts?!?!

Are there any other single base powders of comparable burn rates? When I use The Google to search single base pistol powders I don't find much direction. I'd heard Vit is single base, but what reference source can I use to determine this for other powders?

Look at the MSDS for the powder in question. Nitrocellulose is the main ingredient in gunpowder. If you see nitroglycerin in the formulation it's a double base powder.

And,  the NitroG is the primary source for the increase in heat.

Vit:  Cooler burning,  cleaner burning,  very linear loads,  gives half of a case full or more,  meters perfectly;  and for some,  smells good in the morning. :)

There are other good powders too,  but ^^^^^^^^.

So I looked at the MSDS for all the Hodgdon powders (all the child companies) and found no pistol powders that were single base. I haven't found any from Alliant so far either. Is Vit really the only single base pistol powder of good reputation?

I think some of the NobelSport (Vectan) powders (Prima V & Ba 9.5) folks use for 9mm minor, are also single base.  No nitro in there but there is Dinitrotoluene
