Stainless tumbling is good!
« on: February 04, 2017, 09:47:38 PM »
So last turkey day I ordered a Frankford arsenal stainless tumbler on a black Friday deal from Cabela's.

It works really well!  I've polished a couple thousand pistol and a couple thousand 223 lake city brass with great results.

If you deprime before tumbling it will clean the primer pockets like new as well.

I like the timer function as you just set it and can walk away.  Three hours is plenty to clean even the most tarnished cases.

The added time drying cases isn't that big a deal I just lay them out on a towel with a fan blowing over them and they dry pretty quick.  I live in the desert so you may have humidity challenges to deal with.

I also like the fact that it contains the crud and I don't have to worry about it airborne in my reloading area.

I still use my vibratory tumbler but it is to remove case lube after sizing bottle neck cases.

Cheers,
Toby

Looks like brand new brass.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Until you try it, you won't believe the results you can get.

I only use it on the really tarnished brass, but what goes in looking as bad as a WW2 battlefield pickup will come out as shiny as a new piece of brass.

I shake the water and pins out of mine and then run them through the vibratory cleaner in crushed walnut shell media to dry them out.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I forgot to mention all I use in the solution is about a teaspoon of lemon shine and a couple a squirts of dawn and hot water.

Three hours later even the most tarnished outdoor range brass looks like new.  Truly amazing.

The water that comes out of the tumbler looks black with a tinge of purple. It's nice knowing that crud isn't airborne.

Cheers,
Toby

  • Is it broken? Then why are you fixing it?

Squeaky clean. I haven't messed with a stainless model but I use all sorts of media for all sorts of applications. In any case, looks like you're a happy customer with another FA product. Those guys do some great stuff.

Wife: Is it broken?
Me: No.
Wife: Then why does it need to be fixed?
Me: I knew you wouldn't understand.
Me: You're way smarter than I am babe.
Wife: Ok, so if it's not broken and not fixed, what exactly is it?
Me: It's taking time Hun. Just taking some time.

I got a Lyman wet tumbler on sale from Midway and I love it!  Only way to clean brass IMHO.
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

I love my wet tumbler.  Some things that  I've learned, that you guys may want to consider
  • decapping before tumbling will prevent water from getting trapped behind the primer
  • The SS pins are not 100% necessary.  The inside of the case doesn't get a nice looking, however this saves time not having to sort out the pins
  • 90 minutes is sufficient to clean moderately dirty brass
  • Add a few squirts of car wash/wax to the solution, this cleans the cases and lubes at the same time

I love my rotary tumbler. I don't love case mouth peening, though, so I tend to run mine for just 30-45 minutes with extra pins.

Just another thing to add to my "Desperately Want" list.......  I have about 1500 brass ready for cleaning this week and I am wishing I had one of these to do it all with!

Amazon has them now for ~$150....previously (1-3 months ago) they were in the $180 range there.

The reason:

? Under the Clinton administration, these were to be mandatory.
? Under the Trump administration, these will be covered by Medicare.
