As a visual, here's a cartoon to show what they're talking about. The
velocity and
chamber pressure (the unit we are REALLY concerned about) are in 1:1 relationship throughout the useful zone. But at some point above
Max Load, the 2 metrics separate, and chamber pressure zooms way up while velocity levels off.

So that's why ID and Painter are looking at the change in velocities so closely. If you simply looked at the velocity you would still see increases, but the amount of increase is slowing. One has to realize that chamber pressure has
not leveled off, but is in fact racing skyward.
Some of the blown up guns you see are people trying to get 5 more fps velocity. They don't realize that the chamber pressure has meanwhile zoomed to 2X the safe limit.
